ProPhotos Review | Is It The Best AI Portrait Generator?
Integrates with
ProPhotos turns ordinary photos into professional headshots, generating studio-style portraits in about half an hour.
Where ProPhotos sits
The AI headshot category is crowded — HeadshotPro, BetterPic, Secta, dozens more — and almost all of them work the same way: upload selfies, wait, receive a batch of generated portraits. ProPhotos is one of the simpler entrants. It is a one-time-purchase product from a Hollywood, California company that trains a model on your uploaded photos and returns a fixed batch of professional-looking headshots in suits, coats and blazers against studio, office and bokeh backgrounds. No subscription, no editing suite, no photographer review. You pay $39, $49 or $59 depending on how many images you want (at time of writing, per the vendor pricing page), and the images are yours under a full commercial license.
What I look for in this category is three things: likeness accuracy (do I recognise myself?), artefact quality (does the skin and hair survive a close look?), and whether the tool lets me fix the 10% of images that are almost right. ProPhotos does well on the first, acceptably on the second, and nothing at all on the third. That last gap shapes the whole review.
What it actually does
The workflow is four steps: register, pay, upload photos, wait. The vendor recommends 5–15 source photos shot on different days, in different outfits, lighting and poses (its own FAQ range; a third-party listing says 10–30 — the more variety you give it, the better the model). You do not need to wear professional clothing in the uploads; the AI dresses the output in suits, coats, dress shirts and blazers, with industry-specific styling available (executive, chef, doctor, lawyer and similar).
What comes back is plan-dependent. Basic at $39: 40 unique headshots, 8 background and clothing styles, ready in 90 minutes. Premium at $49: 100 headshots, 20 styles, a free background changer tool, 45 minutes. Professional at $59: 200 headshots, 40 styles, background changer, 30 minutes. An Enterprise tier (custom pricing, quoted by email) sells credits to companies outfitting many employees, with a consistent look across the team and 24/7 account support. Payments run through Stripe; the site says card details never touch its servers.
Privacy handling is spelled out more clearly than most competitors': the trained AI model is automatically deleted after 30 days, and you can delete your account and data manually from the profile at any time. The privacy policy, as summarised by the directory Inferse, states uploaded photos may be shared with the service providers needed to generate the model, and generated output may be used in marketing — so read that policy before uploading anything sensitive. There is no free tier and no free trial; you pay before you see any output. There is also no public API.
The vendor reports over 12.6 million headshots generated for more than 50,000 customers (vendor claim, via Aigregator's listing). Turnaround claims held up directionally in third-party testing: AI Headshot Dude's review measured roughly 60–120 minutes end to end on the slower tiers.
My testing notes
First observation: the likeness is the strong point. Following the vendor's guidance, I uploaded a spread of casual photos — different days, different lighting, mostly unflattering phone shots — and the batch that came back was recognisably me in a way that some generators miss. One of the results from this tool ranks among the better AI headshots I have seen of myself: correct face shape, correct hairline, plausible shoulders and collar fit. The set is volume-based rather than curated — you get 40 to 200 images and you pick — so the hit rate matters more than the single best image, and mine was maybe one in four I would actually put on LinkedIn.
Second observation: zoom in and the illusion thins. Every close-up in my batch had the skin smoothing problem the AI Headshot Dude review also flags — pores erased, forehead slightly waxy. At LinkedIn thumbnail size it reads as a real photograph; at full resolution on a company team page it reads as generated. This is common across the category, but a couple of competitors produce sharper skin detail. If your output target is a small avatar, you will not care. If you plan to print the image or run it large on a website, you will.
Third observation: there is no repair path. If an image is 90% right except for a collar glitch or an odd ear, there is nothing to do but discard it and hope another of the batch works. The background changer on Premium and Professional is the only post-generation control, and it works on backgrounds only — you cannot adjust face, expression, outfit or lighting. The comparison point: tools in this category that offer an editor or a photographer review pass give you somewhere to go when the batch is mixed. ProPhotos makes it a lottery with more tickets at higher tiers.
One comparative note on the market position: Inferse's directory currently ranks ProPhotos 19th of 25 AI headshot generators with an internal score of 5.1, while AI Headshot Dude gave it 4.2 out of 5 and iTechGuides scored the pricing 7.9 out of 10. That spread matches my own experience — a good generator with a thin product around it. The tools above it in that directory generally buy their position with editors, review passes or more style control, and they charge more for the privilege. Whether that trade is right depends entirely on how fussy your output target is.
One process note: uploading is fast, but there is no preview of what the model learned about your face before it generates. You commit, wait 30–90 minutes, and then find out. The refund story is thin — I could not find a published refund policy on the site — so the $39 entry is a genuine gamble on your source photos being good enough.
What it does not do
No editing of generated images beyond backgrounds. No manual retouching, no photographer review, no regeneration of a specific image with tweaks. No video headshots. No API, so it cannot be wired into an HR onboarding pipeline — Enterprise handles bulk orders through a credit portal and email invitations instead. No free trial and no free plan, so quality cannot be evaluated before payment. No subscription option for people who want periodic refreshes — though for a headshot that is arguably correct; one-time purchase matches the job.
Output quality depends heavily on what you feed it. The vendor's own FAQ asks for multi-outfit, multi-lighting uploads, and people with a camera roll full of consistent selfies will get a weaker model. There is no feedback channel where a human reviews a failed batch.
Verdict
ProPhotos does one job and prices it honestly. For a job seeker, freelancer or professional who needs a credible LinkedIn photo this week, $39 for 40 images in 90 minutes is straightforward value against a $200–$500 photographer session — provided you accept that the images are synthetic at close range and that the pick is yours to make. In my testing the likeness was genuinely good and the batch volume meant I always found something usable, but the skin smoothing and the total absence of editing controls are the reasons this is a 3.7 and not higher. I rate it 3.7 — 3.5 for core functionality depth (generation quality is good, repair tooling is missing entirely), 4.0 for value at the entry price, 4.0 for usability (the flow is four steps and the turnaround claims held up), 3.2 for support and ecosystem (email-based, no API, enterprise support is quote-tier), and 3.5 on reliability signals: real volume behind the product and mostly positive third-party reviews, undercut by artefacts at close range and no published refund policy. Buy the $39 tier once for your personal brand; teams should trial the Enterprise credits on a few employees before committing the whole company.

Pros
- Likeness accuracy is the strong point — the best of my generated batch ranks among the best AI headshots I've seen of myself, built from unflattering phone photos
- One-time pricing with no subscription: $39 for 40 headshots (at time of writing, per prophotos.ai/pricing) undercuts a photographer session by an order of magnitude
- Volume-based delivery means the hit rate works out — roughly one in four images in my batch was LinkedIn-usable
- Privacy terms are explicit: trained model auto-deleted after 30 days, manual account deletion available, Stripe handles payments
- Turnaround claims are honest — 30 to 90 minutes by tier, matching the 60–120 minutes a third-party reviewer measured end to end
Cons
- Zero repair path: no editing beyond the background changer on Premium+, so a 90%-right image with a collar glitch is unusable
- Skin smoothing visible on close inspection — fine for thumbnails, weak for print or large team-page images
- No free trial, no free plan and no published refund policy, so you commit $39+ before seeing any output
- No public API and no bulk automation — Enterprise orders run through a credit portal and email invites
- Output quality is hostage to your camera roll: the vendor's own FAQ demands multi-outfit, multi-lighting source photos
