Integrates with

Shopify is an all-in-one commerce platform for building and running an online store, with tools for payments, inventory, marketing, and an AI assistant called Sidekick.

Where Shopify sits

Shopify is the default answer to "I need to sell things online," and by now that default is well earned: millions of merchants run on it, the checkout converts, and the app ecosystem can fill almost any gap in the core platform. What has changed in the past year is why an AI tools catalog carries it. Shopify has gone from being commerce software that happens to have some Magic features to a platform that bundles an AI assistant (Sidekick), an AI website builder, and a stated allowance of "millions of tokens" of AI usage into every paid plan — while simultaneously launching an Agentic plan at $0 for selling exclusively through AI channels like ChatGPT, Copilot and Google AI Mode. In my testing the AI layer is genuinely useful for admin grunt work, but the reason to buy Shopify remains what it has always been: a complete, reliable commerce operating system with payments, inventory, POS, B2B and shipping under one roof.

One housekeeping note before the substance: the listing link on our catalog is an affiliate redirect. It did not affect anything below — every price here comes from Shopify's own pricing page and public help documentation, and the rating is set against the same rubric we use for everything else on ToolSpotter.

What it actually does

At time of writing, Shopify sells four core plans in the US, plus two edge plans. Basic is $39 per month on monthly billing or $29 per month billed yearly. Grow (the tier formerly named "Shopify") is $105 or $79 yearly. Advanced is $399 or $299 yearly. Plus starts at $2,300 per month on a three-year term. Starter ($5/month) covers checkout links and buy buttons without a storefront, and the new Agentic plan ($0/month) is for selling through AI channels only, paying per sale. All plans include unlimited products, unlimited hosting with free SSL, 200+ real-time reports, 10 inventory locations (200 on Plus), up to 3 B2B catalogs (unlimited on Plus), abandoned checkout recovery, discount codes, gift cards, and the Sidekick AI assistant. Products carry up to 2,048 variants across three options.

The money math lives in the payment rates. On Shopify Payments, online standard cards run 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow, 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced, and 2.25% + 30¢ on Plus, with +1% for international cards on every plan. Use a third-party payment provider instead and Shopify adds its own transaction fee: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, 0.2% on Plus. Shopify's own help center puts the break-even for upgrading from Basic to Grow at roughly $200,000 in annual sales with Shopify Payments, or $60,000 without it. Physical retail is a per-location add-on: POS Lite is included everywhere, POS Pro is $89 per month per location.

The AI story has two layers. Sidekick, the in-admin assistant, is included on every paid plan and can answer questions about your store's data, draft product descriptions and content, and perform admin actions. Shopify Magic covers generated text across the platform. The catch is a quiet packaging line introduced in April 2026: Sidekick's custom-app generation is gated to Grow and above. The Winter '26 Edition (December 2025) added an upgraded Sidekick and "Agentic Storefronts" — storefront surfaces designed to be read and transacted by AI agents — which is where the $0 Agentic plan plugs in.

The ecosystem scale is one of the platform's moats and the homepage quantifies it: the Shopify App Store is listed at 21,000+ commerce apps (vendor figure), and the Agentic Storefronts push means your catalog can appear inside AI chats where shoppers check out without leaving the conversation. Shopify also bundles adjacent money products — the vendor states $5B has been lent through Shopify Capital in the US so far, with loans up to $5M and 0% equity taken — and Shop Pay, which the vendor claims converts up to 50% higher than guest checkout based on a 2023 external study. Those are vendor claims, but the direction matches what I see in practice: the platform keeps absorbing functions that used to require separate vendors.

My testing notes

Two observations from setting up and running a test store. First, the admin remains the best argument for the platform. Getting from empty account to a live store with products, a theme, payments and a shipping profile took me under an hour, and the defaults are sane — tax handling, checkout flow, and email notifications work out of the box in ways that open-source carts still make you assemble yourself. The 3-day trial followed by a $1/month promotional rate for three months lowers the entry cost to almost nothing while you build.

Second, Sidekick is a real time-saver within a narrow band. Asking it "what were my best-selling products last month" or "draft a description for this SKU in a friendly tone" works well, and it clearly has store context — it knows your products, orders and settings without you pasting anything. Where it thins out is anything requiring judgment across apps or custom data models; it is an admin copilot, not a commerce strategist. The April 2026 gating of custom-app generation to Grow+ is a signal of how Shopify intends to meter the heavier AI compute as it rolls out.

I also ran the fee arithmetic directly, because that is where Shopify actually costs money. On Basic with a third-party gateway, the %2 surcharge means every $3,300 of monthly third-party-processed volume costs $66 — exactly the monthly gap between Basic and Grow. If you cannot use Shopify Payments (not available in every market), plan selection is a fee-optimization problem first and a feature problem second. With Shopify Payments the delta shrinks to card-rate differences, and staying on Basic longer is fine.

Limits

The checkout is not fully customizable below Plus — a long-standing complaint for brands that want bespoke checkout logic without a $2,300/month commitment. Basic includes no additional staff accounts at all, which is a real wall for anyone with even one employee who needs admin access. Content marketing tooling (the blog, Shopify Email/Messaging) is serviceable but basic compared to dedicated platforms. The app ecosystem is vast but it is also where costs hide: a store with six paid apps can easily double or triple its platform spend, and app quality varies. Reporting is good on all plans now, but the deepest customization and API headroom (2x rate limits, region-specific themes and checkout) arrive only on Advanced. Plus pricing is sales-led and opaque beyond the $2,300 floor. And while Sidekick is bundled generously, the "millions of tokens" figure is a vendor claim with no published metering — I would not budget against it.

Verdict

Shopify is still the most complete way to run an online store without assembling a stack yourself, and the current packaging — AI bundled from the cheapest plan, a free entry plan for AI-channel selling, yearly billing at roughly a 25% discount — is coherent and merchant-friendly. The costs that matter are transaction rates and apps, not the subscription, and the platform's weakest points (checkout customization below Plus, no staff accounts on Basic) are deliberate plan fences rather than product gaps. Rated 4.6 on the rubric: the commerce core is deep across payments, POS, B2B, shipping and now AI (40% core functionality), the subscription is fair value though rates and apps add up (20% value), the admin and theme system are the fastest path to a live store I know (20% usability), the app ecosystem and 24/7 support are unmatched in this category (10%), and uptime, PCI DSS Level 1 certification and years of public company reporting are strong reliability signals (10%). For a solo seller, start on Basic and stop reading reviews. For a scaling team, the Grow-vs-Advanced decision is pure arithmetic on your fee volume and staff count.

Sources

Pros

  • From empty account to live store with payments, theme and shipping took me under an hour — the defaults are the product
  • Sidekick and 'millions of tokens' of AI usage are bundled into every paid plan including Basic, not metered as an add-on (vendor pricing page, at time of writing)
  • Transparent, published rate card: third-party transaction fees fall 2%/1%/0.6%/0.2% across tiers, so upgrade decisions are calculable arithmetic
  • Yearly billing cuts every core plan roughly 25% ($29/$79/$299 per month vs $39/$105/$399), with no negotiation required
  • Every plan now carries 200+ real-time reports, 10 inventory locations, 3 B2B catalogs and unlimited products — the base feature floor is high

Cons

  • Basic includes no additional staff accounts and no third-party carrier-calculated shipping, walls that bite quickly once you have any help
  • Checkout customization is locked to Plus (from $2,300/month on a 3-year term) except for limited thank-you-page edits
  • Third-party payment providers add 2% on Basic — an invisible tax that changes the plan math entirely if Shopify Payments is unavailable in your market
  • Real store costs are driven by paid apps, which are unvetted in quality and can double the platform spend
  • Sidekick's custom-app generation was gated to Grow and above in April 2026, and the 'millions of tokens' allowance is a vendor claim with no published metering

Best For

Anyone from solo sellers to scaling brands who wants a complete, hosted commerce stack — payments, inventory, POS, B2B and shipping — with AI tooling bundled rather than metered.
