Integrates with
AI tool that transforms regular photos into professional, high-quality profile pictures for social media and business use.
Where PFP Maker sits
PFPMaker (pfpmaker.com) started life in 2020 as a genuinely free utility — upload a photo, watch the background disappear, pick from a grid of colored and creative backdrops, add a border, download. That free tool, now branded "PFP Maker Classic — Free Forever," is still there and still free, and it remains one of the fastest ways to get a decent profile picture with zero friction. Since then the product has grown a paid layer around it: AI headshots from a single selfie, lifestyle "AI Photoshoot" packs, and a face-focused photo editor with dozens of retouching and restyling tools. The company reports 18M+ users, and its Trustpilot contact details place it in Estonia.
The market it competes in has two distinct segments and PFPMaker straddles both. At the bottom are free background removers, where the classic tool competes on simplicity. At the top are the $29–$99 AI headshot packs (Aragon, HeadshotPro and the like), where PFPMaker now sells subscriptions and credit packs from $9. Sitting between them is a good position if the output quality holds — and a dangerous one if it doesn't, because free-tool users have no patience and headshot buyers expect to look like themselves.
What I look for in this category is narrow and unforgiving: does the AI output actually look like the person, is the free tier really free, and does support answer when generation goes wrong. The public review record on PFPMaker is unusually detailed on exactly these three points, which made my evaluation possible without a hands-on paid run — and it's a mixed picture.
What PFP Maker actually does
The free classic tool does background removal plus replacement (color, gradient, photo and creative backgrounds), shapes, borders and text overlays — no credits, no watermark, per the vendor's free-headshot page. The paid side splits into four surfaces. Professional AI Headshots: one selfie becomes studio-style business photos in "515+ outfits, backgrounds and poses" (homepage) or "400+ styles" (headshot page), with a full run producing 120+ headshots in around 20 seconds of processing per the vendor's claims. AI Photoshoot: lifestyle and dating looks. The AI Photo Editor: retouch and enhance, background change, object replace, object recolor, accessory remover, photo relight, background changer, unblur, color correction, camera-angle shift and a delightfully specific "mirror selfie cleanup" that erases smudges and toothpaste spray. Plus pet filters and branding tools. The model lineup on the pricing dashboard is current-generation: their own PFPMaker v1 alongside GPT Image 2.5, GPT Image 2 and Nano Banana 2 — a multi-model setup where the user picks a balance of speed, realism and cost.
My testing notes
Three concrete observations from my evaluation.
First, pricing is now subscription-and-credits, and it is the clearest number I found anywhere on the product. The dashboard pricing page at time of writing: Starter at $9/month with 180 credits (viral selfies and AI headshots, with "Enhanced HD" headshots reserved for Pro), Pro at $15/month discounted from $23 with 360 credits (Enhanced HD headshots, no watermarks, credits rolling over up to 3 months), and Premium at $35/month discounted from $49 with 1,050 credits for teams and power users. The headshot landing page separately advertises one-time credit packs from $9 and summarizes the economics as "about $9 per ~100 headshots." The classic tools remain free at every tier. Notable design choice: credit rollover on Pro (up to three months) rather than use-it-or-lose-it monthly credits — friendlier than most competitors in this segment.
Second, the self-reported scale numbers don't hold up under a single glance. The homepage simultaneously displays a live counter of "626,028,360 profile pictures created" and the claim "18M+ users and 55M+ profile pictures created" — two numbers that differ by an order of magnitude on the same page. Headshot style counts drift between "515+" and "400+" depending on which page you read, and the marketing claims ("36x more interactions," "146% more engagement") are unsourced. I don't think this is fraud so much as accumulated marketing sediment from different eras of the product, but it means every quantity on this site needs the phrase "vendor claim" attached to it — including the 20-second processing time and the 120-headshots-per-run figure.
Third, the review record tells a consistent story about the two things that matter. Trustpilot shows 4.3/5 across roughly 192 reviews, 86% five-star — but 11% one-star, and zero reviews in the last 12 months (the body of reviews is from 2023 and earlier). Reading the negative threads: a customer who paid and got nothing for weeks with no reply, then received a decent set after 4–5 weeks; another reporting that generated images "merged some of my features with what 'latin american' stock images it had" with race and age bias in the output; and repeated complaints about unresponsive support against a money-back guarantee. The positive threads are equally specific: 10+ usable work headshots for $15, background work that "didn't edit my face or anything else like other AIs," and one customer whose chat revision request was turned around in under 24 hours. A second aggregator (FactCheckTool, 3.3/5 from 12 reviews) lands on the same split — easy and fast, with slow support and occasional unusable outputs. The pattern I take from this: output quality is good-but-lottery (120 images makes the math work — even a 10% hit rate yields a dozen usable shots), and support is inconsistent rather than absent.
What it does not do
PFPMaker is a portrait tool, not a general image platform: no scene generation, no product photography, no video. The AI headshot generator is the paid core, and its consistency is the known weakness — multiple reviewers across two independent platforms describe outputs that drift from their actual face (alien-looking eyes, ethnicity and age drift). If you need guaranteed likeness for corporate directories or ID-adjacent uses, this class of tool is a gamble regardless of vendor, and PFPMaker's own review record shows it. The free tier does not include AI generation: the free headshot generator offers 30 cleanup-and-background styles, while the 400+ AI styles sit behind credits. Team and enterprise functionality is thin — "for teams and power users" is as deep as the Premium page goes; there is no documented admin console, SSO or brand-kit API. Support response times are unpredictable per the review record. And the fresh counter on the site's own homepage should tell you how much weight to put on any of its numbers.
Verdict
PFPMaker is two products wearing one brand: a genuinely free, genuinely fast profile-picture utility that does its simple job (background removal and tasteful variants) as well as anything else I have used, and a paid AI headshot studio that delivers a useful fraction of a 120-image run at a price far below photoshoot economics. It is rated 3.7 on the rubric: core functionality is broad and current (multi-model lineup, deep face-editing suite) with output consistency as the ceiling (40% of the score), value is strong — $9 to $15/month with rollover credits beats per-pack headshot rivals, usability is a highlight (upload, pick, download), support and ecosystem are the weakest dimension per the review record, and reliability signals are mixed (4.3 Trustpilot but an aging review base and inflated counters). For a LinkedIn refresh, a team page or a dating profile, the free classic tool plus a single month of credits is one of the better spends in this category. For anything where the face must be exact, treat the output as a lottery ticket and keep a human photographer's number handy.

Pros
- PFP Maker Classic is still genuinely free — background removal, creative and color backgrounds, borders and text with no credits and no watermark, per the free-headshot page.
- Credit pricing is concrete and modest: $9/month Starter (180 credits), $15/month Pro (360 credits), $35/month Premium (1,050 credits), plus one-time packs from $9 (~100 headshots).
- Pro credits roll over for up to three months — unusual generosity in a category built on monthly resets.
- Multi-model generation (PFPMaker v1, GPT Image 2.5, GPT Image 2, Nano Banana 2) lets output style be tuned rather than fixed.
- The face-editing suite is the deepest I've seen for portraits: object replace/recolor, accessory removal, relight, unblur, camera-angle shift and mirror-selfie cleanup in one place.
Cons
- Output likeness is a lottery: independent reviewers report alien-looking eyes and race/age drift, and even satisfied buyers describe 'a few misses' among 120 images.
- Support is inconsistent — Trustpilot's one-star cluster cites unanswered refund requests and 4–5 week delivery gaps, against one case of 24-hour revision turnaround.
- The homepage contradicts itself on scale (a 626M live counter vs '18M+ users and 55M+ profile pictures'), and engagement claims (36x, 146%) are unsourced.
- AI generation is not free: the free tool is cleanup and backgrounds only; the 400+ AI styles sit behind credits.
- The independent review base is aging (no Trustpilot reviews in the last 12 months), leaving current product quality hard to gauge.
