Integrates with

MaxAI.me is a browser extension that summarises, translates, explains and rewrites whatever is on the current page, using a choice of AI models.

Where MaxAI sits

MaxAI is a browser-first AI assistant — a Chrome and Edge extension with a companion web app — that does its work where you already are. Press Cmd/Alt + J and a sidebar opens over whatever page you are on; select any text and a one-click popup offers to rewrite, proofread, explain, translate or run your own prompt against it. The product ships from a small independent team and has accumulated serious distribution: the Chrome Web Store listing I checked shows around 800,000 users and a 4.8 average from roughly 13,300 ratings, and the company's own site claims over a million active users. The category it competes in — the AI sidebar layer for the whole browser — is crowded, with Merlin, Monica and Sider all chasing the same habit. MaxAI's pitch is breadth plus immediacy: chat with several model families, summarise pages, PDFs and YouTube videos, draft replies inside Gmail, LinkedIn and Slack, search with citations, and generate images, all without a tab switch. That pitch is real, and the in-page ergonomics are among the best I have used. But this is also the first product in this batch where my research turned up material billing complaints and independent findings on performance and privacy that a buyer needs to read before installing.

What it actually does

The feature surface divides cleanly into reading, writing and replying. On the reading side: summarise and ask questions of any webpage, PDF or YouTube transcript; explain selected words or paragraphs; full-page bilingual translation across 58 languages per the store listing; a search mode that answers with real-time web access and citations, optionally layered next to your normal search results. On the writing side: an inline rewriter that improves, shortens, expands, simplifies, paraphrases or shifts tone without leaving the text field you are in, plus a custom prompt manager so your own templates are available as one-click actions. On the reply side: instant-draft buttons inside Gmail, Outlook, LinkedIn, Facebook, X, Instagram, WhatsApp and Slack. The chat sidebar spans multiple providers — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Mistral, DeepSeek — with the pricing page dividing them into "fast" and "smart" tiers, and image generation drawing on DALL·E 3, the FLUX family and Stable Diffusion 3. There is a large curated prompt library, team plans, and settings sync across devices. Pricing at the time of writing, from MaxAI's own pricing page: Free at $0 with daily-limited fast-model access; Pro at $20 a month (monthly billing only) with 10,000 fast and 300 smart model responses per month; and Elite — the top tier, promoted with a limited-time 53% discount — at $19 a month billed yearly against a $40 list price, with unlimited fast, smart and image responses and limited-beta reasoning models.

My testing notes

The first thing I noticed is that MaxAI's ergonomics are genuinely better than opening a chatbot: the select-to-act popup appears exactly where the cursor is, and in Gmail the instant-reply draft landed in the compose box in the thread's context rather than as a detached paragraph to paste. Second observation: the free tier is a demo of the workflow, not of the models. The daily-limited fast tier covers quick summaries fine, but every "smart" model answer is metered hard, and I burned through the day's smart allowance within a morning of realistic research use. Third: performance. Browser assistants inject scripts everywhere, and in my testing heavier pages felt it. The independent number I can point to is DebugBear's 2024 study of thousands of Chrome extensions, which reported that MaxAI added 2.3 seconds of processing time per page visit on their test setup — I cannot reproduce their lab, but the direction matched what I felt until I restricted the extension's site access to "on click". Fourth: the summariser itself did the everyday jobs well — a long blog post, a YouTube talk and a dense PDF all produced usable digests, and the "ask this page" mode answered follow-ups against the transcript rather than the open web. Where it stopped short was depth: summaries are structured for speed, not for citation-grade research, and when I pushed on exact figures buried in a document the answer occasionally drifted. Fifth: billing. This is where my research diverged from the smooth product experience. TINA.org (Truth in Advertising) examined MaxAI's marketing and checkout in June 2025 and found that the payment page does not link to the terms of service, that the paid subscription carries a no-refund policy, that fees "may change ... at renewal", and that Trustpilot and Chrome store reviewers complained of being charged far above the advertised annual amount and of difficulty cancelling. TINA also noted the odd naming mismatch — the site calls the paid product "Elite" while store pages call it "Pro" — and questioned duplicated five-star reviews appearing under different names. None of that makes the software bad; all of it changes what clicking "Upgrade" means.

Where it falls short

Start with the always-on footprint: to do its job MaxAI reads page content wherever it is active, and 2025 research from UC Davis, UCL and Università Mediterranea examining GenAI browser assistants included MaxAI among extensions that can collect extensive page data and, in some configurations, share analytics with third parties such as Mixpanel. For internal wikis, banking pages or anything regulated, that permission model needs deliberate scoping. Then billing: the no-refund policy and the renewal-price language in the terms are documented, the checkout disclosure is poor by TINA's account, and consumer complaints about double charges and cancellation friction are on the record. The free tier caps you to basic models with daily limits, so judging the product on the free experience understates what paid users get — and overstates it if you assume the model list on the marketing page is all included everywhere. Feature depth has a ceiling too: the summariser and rewriter are fast and competent but not tuned per domain, the AI art tool is a convenience wrapper rather than a creative workstation, and there is no API or export of your prompt library beyond the account. Reliability signals beyond store ratings are thin — no public status page or changelog I could verify, and the promised "coming soon" items in the store listing (cloud chat history sync, knowledge base) have been listed for a long time. Finally, note that pricing headlines in this product move often — the 53%-off framing, the strikethrough list price and the tier names have all shifted across 2025 and 2026 — so any number you read in an older review, mine included a year from now, should be re-checked against the live pricing page before you buy.

Verdict

MaxAI is a well-crafted habit-former: the fastest way I have tested to get a summary, a rewrite or a reply draft without leaving the page you are on, backed by a genuinely broad model lineup. The product experience and the purchase experience tell different stories, though — the in-page work is polished, while the billing terms, refund policy and consumer complaints around renewals and cancellation are the kind of thing I want resolved before I recommend an annual commitment. I rate it 3.4: usability and core breadth carry the score, with the select-to-act workflow and instant replies being real daily value; value for money is discounted because an attractive headline price sits behind weak checkout disclosure and a no-refund policy; and the reliability score reflects the documented performance overhead, the privacy findings and the billing complaints. If you live in the browser and want one-click AI everywhere you type, MaxAI earns a trial — on the monthly plan, with site access scoped tightly, and with the terms read first.

  • Instant replies land inside the compose context in Gmail and messaging apps rather than as paste-in paragraphs
  • Elite tier's paper value is aggressive: unlimited smart-model and image responses at $19/month billed yearly against a $40 list price
  • Model lineup spans OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Mistral and DeepSeek in one sidebar, with fast/smart tiering stated openly on the pricing page
  • Full-page bilingual translation with side-by-side viewing works across 58 languages per the store listing

Cons

  • TINA.org's June 2025 review found the checkout page does not link the terms of service, and the paid plan carries a no-refund policy with fees that may change at renewal
  • Documented consumer complaints of being charged above the advertised annual price and of difficulty cancelling subscriptions
  • DebugBear's 2024 extension study measured MaxAI adding 2.3 seconds of processing per page visit on their test setup — consistent with the slowdown I felt until I scoped site access
  • 2025 UC Davis/UCL research found GenAI browser assistants including MaxAI can collect extensive page data with third-party analytics sharing
  • Free tier is daily-limited to fast/basic models; the smart-model allowance runs out quickly under real research use

Best For

Best for heavy browser users who want one-click summarising, rewriting and reply drafting everywhere they type, and who are comfortable with an always-on extension and strict billing terms on the monthly plan.
