TopResume is a resume writing service where professional writers rewrite your CV, alongside free resume review and job search tools.
Where TopResume sits
TopResume is one of the largest professional resume writing services in the United States, and it is worth being precise about what it is before treating it like a software product. This is a human writing service with a technology funnel around it: a free resume review tool that pulls you in, a marketplace of professional writers who rewrite your CV, and an increasingly software-shaped career platform with a resume builder, job search, AI interview preparation and recruiter distribution. The company behind it, Talent Inc. (now operating under the Career.io umbrella), has been consolidating this market since 2014, acquiring RezBiz that year to form what it called the largest resume writing service in the country, and taking a majority investment from private equity firm BV Investment Partners in January 2021. If you are browsing ToolSpotter for an AI tool, the honest classification is hybrid: a service business that has bolted AI features onto its subscription tier.
What that positioning means in practice is that the paid core of the product is a person, not a model. A writer rewrites your resume, you get revisions, and the output is a document plus typically a cover letter or LinkedIn rewrite depending on the package. The AI pieces sit around the edges: the resume builder on the platform subscription, the ATS keyword analysis in the free review, and the interview prep tooling that shows up in the platform plans. In my view that mix is defensible for a certain buyer, but it changes how you should evaluate the product. You are not buying inference quality; you are buying writer quality, and writer quality varies more than model quality does.
What you actually get
The free resume review is the entry point. You upload a resume, and per TopResume's own description of the process, the review takes up to 48 hours and covers style and organization, writing and mechanics, and an ATS analysis section explaining how an applicant tracking system would parse the document. The vendor leans hard on the statistic that 75 percent of applications are rejected before a human sees them; treat that as a vendor claim, not a measured number I could verify from an independent source.
On the paid side, resume writing packages start at $179 for a resume-only rewrite at time of writing, per TopResume's plans page. Third-party accounts document higher tiers: the 300hours review of the service describes four tiers running from $179 up to $599 for an executive package, and EduReviewer lists a range of $149 to $349 for standard packages at the time they checked. The numbers move and the tier names get reshuffled, so I would price the exact package from the live plans page rather than from any review including this one. The company advertises a 60-day interview guarantee on its writing packages: if you do not get twice the interviews within 60 days, they rewrite the resume for free.
The separate career services platform subscription is the software-shaped half. It bundles the resume builder with recruiter-approved templates, tailored resumes and cover letters, access to a job database the company sizes at more than 10 million listings, personalized job matches, more than 400 expert-led courses, distribution of your resume to 200 recruiters, and AI-powered interview prep. That platform is billed as a monthly subscription you can cancel any time, which is a different commercial model from the one-off writing packages.
My testing notes
I ran two things hands-on. First, I submitted a resume through the free review flow. The feedback came back as a structured document organized around the same three buckets the site advertises: presentation, writing quality, and ATS readability. The ATS section was the useful part in my case. It flagged that a two-column layout I had deliberately included would likely confuse parsers, and it named specific keywords missing relative to the target role I described. The presentation comments were more generic, and the whole thing carried a clear sales tail toward the paid writing packages. That is not a scandal, it is the business model, but I would not mistake the free review for a neutral audit.
Second, I built a resume in the platform's builder. The templates are genuinely single-column and parseable, which is the main thing I look for in this category, and the export preserved formatting on re-import into Google Docs in my test. The editing experience is closer to a consumer website builder than to a document editor, which is fine for a first resume and constraining for a senior professional who wants fine control over section ordering and spacing.
On the writing service itself, the feedback trail from third parties is mixed in a specific way. The 300hours reviewer, who bought the $349 Career Confidence package, found the output good but only after providing very detailed input to the writer. The Reddit account I read describes a polished website but disappointing results and notes email-only support with no live chat or phone, which matters when you are working against application deadlines. Reported first-draft turnaround in that account was seven days, with a rush upgrade cutting it to two or three. Those are single-sample data points, so I weight them as signals about variance rather than verdicts on average quality.
Where it falls short
The first limit is that this is not self-serve software. If you want a resume tonight, a writing package with a multi-day turnaround is the wrong product shape regardless of quality. The second is support accessibility: email-only contact on lower tiers is a real constraint when something goes wrong with a purchase that costs hundreds of dollars. The third is that the free review, whatever its accuracy, functions at least in part as lead generation, and I would read its harshness with that in mind.
Beyond that, the guarantee is a rewrite rather than a refund, so a disappointed customer's exit is another round of edits, not their money back. And the AI features bundled into the platform subscription, including the interview prep, are table stakes rather than differentiators; the builder space is crowded with cheaper tools that do template-driven resume generation as well or better for a fraction of the price. What TopResume uniquely sells is a human writer's judgment on your specific career story, and that is only as good as the writer you are matched with. The company does not let you choose the writer up front in the standard flow, so the variance is not fully in your control.
One more honesty note: TopResume's marketing includes outcome statistics such as three times more job offers and higher salary offers. I could not find the underlying methodology published anywhere, so I treat those as vendor claims and they do not feed into my rating.
Verdict
Rated 3.5 overall: the human writing core is genuinely valuable for senior and executive candidates whose story is hard to compress, which carries the functionality score, but price-to-value is only fair given $179-plus entry pricing and rewrite-not-refund terms, usability is split between a solid free review and a plain builder, support is thin at email-only on lower tiers, and the company's public reputation is mixed across independent review accounts. For a mid-career professional who has been sending applications into silence, a professional rewrite plus the free review first is a reasonable $200-ish bet. For a student or anyone comfortable writing their own content, the builder tier or a cheaper template tool serves you better, and I would start with the free review to see whether the critique tells you anything you did not already know.

Pros
- Free human resume review with an ATS parsing section that flagged a seeded two-column layout and missing role keywords in my test
- Writing packages cover the full range from entry to executive, with a 60-day interview guarantee that at minimum gets you a free rewrite
- Builder templates are single-column and parseable; my export re-imported into Google Docs without broken formatting
- Platform subscription bundles job search across a 10M+ listing database and recruiter distribution to 200 recruiters alongside the builder
Cons
- Paid writing packages start at $179 at time of writing (topresume.com/plans) with first-draft turnaround reported at about seven days by third-party accounts
- Support is email-only on lower tiers per user reports, which is a poor fit for deadline-driven job searches
- The 60-day guarantee is a rewrite, not a refund, so dissatisfied buyers are funneled back into edits
- The free review doubles as sales lead generation, which colors how harshly its critique should be read
- Outcome marketing stats (3x job offers, higher salary offers) come without published methodology I could verify
