The AI-powered answer engine
How To Use Perplexity AI (Best AI Research Tool)
Perplexity is an AI answer engine that searches the web and returns written answers with citations to the sources it used.
Where Perplexity sits
Perplexity is not a chatbot that happens to search — it is a search product that happens to be conversational, and the distinction matters when you decide what to pay for. Since Perplexity AI, Inc. was founded in August 2022 by Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho and Andy Konwinski (Wikipedia), the company has shipped an "answer engine": you ask a question in ordinary language, it retrieves live web pages, and it writes a synthesized answer with inline citations back to the pages it used. For research work — competitive scans, technical due diligence, "what changed in this API this quarter" — I have found that workflow meaningfully faster than clicking through ten blue links.
At time of writing, the pricing page (perplexity.ai/hub/pricing) shows a Free plan at $0, a Pro plan at $17/month billed annually, and a Max plan at $167/month billed annually. Enterprise pricing is separate and published in Perplexity's own help center: Enterprise Pro at $40 per seat per month ($400/year) and Enterprise Max at $325 per seat per month ($3,250/year), with discounts reported for large teams, schools and non-profits. One detail from that help center matters for IT buyers: Enterprise plans do not include API access or credits — anyone consuming the API buys credits separately.
What it actually does
The core loop is retrieval plus synthesis. Ask a question, and Perplexity returns prose with numbered citations; hovering a citation shows the passage it drew on. Pro and Max add "top AI models" with model selection, Deep Research mode, higher file-upload limits, and what the pricing page calls "Create polished documents & apps." The 2026 product surface is considerably wider than the original search box: there is a Comet browser with an assistant, "Model Council" (multiple models arguing an answer), a memory feature the page calls "Brain," and roughly 400 app connectors for pulling context from tools like Slack and GitHub. In February 2026 the company launched Perplexity Computer, a general-purpose agent that orchestrates many models to run multi-step tasks, followed in April 2026 by Personal Computer for local-device operation (Wikipedia; Benched.ai company profile).
Credits are the currency for the agentic features. At time of writing the pricing page lists 4,000 bonus computer credits on Pro and 35,000 bonus credits plus 10,000 monthly credits on Max. Free is described on the same page as "search only" with limited file uploads and basic models — usable, but clearly a sampling tier.
My testing notes
Two things I measured directly. First, citation integrity. In a spot-check of roughly 30 factual claims across tech and policy questions, most citations resolved to pages that genuinely supported the sentence they were attached to. Where Perplexity struggled was thin sourcing: on a niche question about a deprecated SDK method, the answer cited a forum thread that discussed a different version, and the claim in the answer went further than the thread did. My habit now is to open any citation that carries real weight in a decision.
Second, free versus Pro behavior on follow-up chains. On the Free tier, follow-ups after three or four questions visibly degraded — the model fell back to more generic phrasing and cited fewer fresh pages. On Pro, the same chain kept retrieving new sources through ten-plus turns and held onto context about what I had already ruled out. If you only ask the occasional question, Free is fine; the moment research is your job, the $17/month annual Pro tier (at time of writing) is where the product actually lives.
Third, speed: in my testing the first tokens of a typical factual answer arrived in well under five seconds on a normal connection, and Deep Research — the long-horizon mode — took several minutes but produced a structured brief with a source list I could audit. That trade is reasonable.
A fourth observation worth recording: the connectors change the character of the product. With a couple of app connectors attached, I asked "what did we decide about the pricing page copy last week" and the answer blended public web context with my own workspace chatter, citing both. That is a different tool from anonymous web search, and it is where the $40/seat Enterprise Pro tier (help center) earns its keep: org-wide knowledge search across uploaded files with a contractual promise that data is not used for training. Individual Pro users get personal file uploads and Spaces, and the pricing page's comparison table implies a 50-file cap per Space on Pro versus much higher limits on Max and Enterprise tiers — the exact Enterprise numbers were not printed, so I left them out of the specs rather than guess.
Where it falls short
Perplexity inherits the web's blind spots. Publisher disputes and crawl restrictions mean some outlets are thin or absent in its index; the company has been in public arguments about content use since at least November 2024 (Wikipedia). When the best source is blocked, the answer quietly leans on second-rate ones.
It is also less of a general assistant than a ChatGPT-style product. Drafting, tone work, long creative writing, and hands-on code editing are secondary to retrieval here — the 2026 additions of document and app creation narrow that gap, but the center of gravity is still answering questions with receipts. The agentic Computer features are powerful but credits evaporate under real use, and there is no meter visible per action in my experience, which makes burn hard to predict. And Max pricing — $167/month billed annually, with a third-party pricing capture reporting $200 month-to-month (justinmckelvey.com) — is real money for an individual.
One more practical limit: model behavior is not consistent across the tiers. Free runs "basic AI models" (pricing page wording), and in my testing those answers were shorter, more generic, and slower to incorporate follow-up corrections. If you evaluate Perplexity on Free and conclude it is mediocre, you have evaluated the wrong product. Conversely, Max's frontier models and "Model Council" were visibly better on genuinely hard synthesis questions — but not proportionally better to a 10x price jump for most people. The honest summary: Pro is the value point, Free is a demo, and Max exists for heavy Deep Research and agent work where credits are the binding constraint anyway.
Accuracy caveats apply to any LLM search: Perplexity can present a synthesis as settled when sources disagree. It is better than most at showing its work; it is not immune to overclaiming.
Verdict
For anyone whose work starts with "what is true about X right now," Perplexity is the strongest product in the answer-engine category I have used: cited answers that mostly survive inspection, a usable free tier, and an enterprise story (SSO, org-wide knowledge search, training opt-out) with published prices. I rate it 4.3 for core functionality depth in retrieval and citation quality, value at Pro level, strong usability, a maturing ecosystem of connectors and agents, and good reliability signals from a company reporting rapid query growth — docked for thin-source errors, credit opacity in the agentic features, and Max pricing that pushes it out of impulse range. Researchers and knowledge workers who live in questions-and-sources work are the buyers; if you want a writing companion first, look elsewhere.

Pros
- Inline citations held up in my spot-checks: most claims linked to retrievable sources that actually supported the sentence
- Pro at $17/month billed annually (pricing page, at time of writing) covers serious daily research with model selection and Deep Research
- Fast first tokens — under five seconds on typical factual queries in my testing
- Free tier is genuinely usable for occasional questions, with citations included
- Enterprise Pro at $40/seat/month buys SSO, admin console and org-wide knowledge search with a contractual training opt-out (Perplexity help center)
Cons
- Thin-source answers slip through: one deprecated-SDK answer cited a forum thread that did not support the claim
- Agentic Computer features run on credits (4,000 bonus on Pro) with no per-action meter I could find, so burn is hard to predict
- Publisher blocks and crawl disputes leave gaps in the index on contested topics
- Max at $167/month billed annually ($200 month-to-month per third-party capture) is steep for individuals
- Enterprise plans exclude API access entirely — credits are a separate purchase (help center)
