Mindsmith is an AI authoring tool for e-learning, with branching scenarios, video and analytics, so trainers can build courses without traditional instructional-design software.

Where Mindsmith sits

Mindsmith is an AI-native e-learning authoring tool: you feed it a document, a presentation, a video or a plain prompt, and it drafts an interactive lesson that you then refine in a tile-based editor and ship to an LMS as SCORM. The company was founded in 2022 and sells mainly to corporate L&D teams and instructional designers — its published customer names include Siemens, Infosys, Cognizant, Laing O'Rourke and UNESCO. What I look for in this category is whether the generated draft is actually a starting point rather than a wall of text someone has to rebuild, and whether the export survives contact with a real LMS. Mindsmith is one of the few tools I have used that takes both questions seriously at the same time, which is why it earns a full review rather than a summary line.

The positioning is deliberately narrow. This is not an LMS, not a course marketplace and not a slide-deck tool with an AI button bolted on. It replaces the authoring step in the chain — the weeks a training team normally spends turning a policy PDF into a module in Articulate Storyline or Rise. Mindsmith's own marketing claims "12x faster" course creation; I would treat that as a vendor claim rather than a measured benchmark, but the direction of travel matches what I saw: draft generation that takes minutes and an editing model that is closer to working with a document than with a timeline canvas.

What Mindsmith actually does

The core loop is generate, author, publish. Generation accepts prompts and uploaded source material — documents, presentations, videos, SOPs — and produces a structured lesson draft with text, structure and assessments. The editor is tile-based: more than 30 interactive element types, including flashcards, sorting exercises, tabs, accordions, branching scenarios, scored and ungraded assessments, and an "AI conversation" tile where learners practise role-plays or oral exams against an AI. The AI conversation tile is the piece that separates Mindsmith from older authoring suites — it only works in dynamic SCORM packages because it needs a live connection, and the company's own help documentation says the tile is stripped out of static exports entirely.

Publishing is where Mindsmith is genuinely different. Its "dynamic SCORM" approach puts a small wrapper file in your LMS that points at content hosted in Mindsmith's cloud; when a learner launches, they get the current version. Edit the lesson, and learners see the change without a re-upload. The company built this on the dispatch concept Rustici Software pioneered and, per its own account, was first to fold it into an authoring tool. Static SCORM export still exists for compliance or backup, and it is honestly labelled: static packages downgrade AI-graded short answers to keyword matching, report only completion and score, and lose the AI conversation tile. On paid plans you also get text-to-speech narration (with an ElevenLabs integration from Professional up), branding and theming, scenario generation, learner analytics at page and interaction level, translation into 70+ languages per the pricing page, and — on Business and above — staging, so you control exactly when edits go live. Enterprise adds SAML/SSO, unlimited AI generation, multiple workspaces and multi-language modules in a single course.

Delivery to an LMS is via SCORM 1.2 and 2004 (all plans), with xAPI available for dynamic modules at the Enterprise tier and offline xAPI for static packages. There is also a link/embed sharing path that needs no LMS at all, a public API on Business and Enterprise workspaces, and an MCP server so AI coding tools can connect — with the sensible constraint that API-key MCP access is read-only and content-changing actions require user-bound OAuth. SCIM directory sync (Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, any SCIM 2.0 source) exists for enterprise provisioning. Security posture is documented in a public trust center: AES-256 at rest, 256-bit TLS in transit, AWS infrastructure, SOC 2 compliance claimed, FERPA-oriented handling, EU hosting option, and a stated policy of never training AI models on uploaded content.

Pricing is per author, with learners always free (pricing page, at time of writing): Free at $0 with 450 one-time AI credits and the "Built with Mindsmith" badge on shared content; Professional at $39 per author per month billed annually ($468/year) with 2,000 AI credits per author per month; Business at $65 per author/month billed annually ($780/year) with 5,000 credits and live collaboration; Enterprise on custom pricing. Extra AI credits can be bought on Business at $1 per 50 credits, and educators get 30% off. Monthly billing exists at a higher rate — G2 lists $49–$79 for the paid tiers, which lines up with the ~20% annual discount the pricing page advertises.

My testing notes

Two things stood out when I worked with it. First, the generation step produces a genuinely editable structure rather than prose. I fed it compliance-style source material and got back a lesson with sectioning, question tiles and a coherent flow — the kind of first draft I would expect from a junior instructional designer on a good day. The AI's phrasing occasionally drifts and the assessment questions skew to recall-level, so SME review is not optional, but I was editing content instead of building scaffolding from nothing. Second, the dynamic SCORM maintenance story works as described. When I edited a published lesson and relaunched it through the wrapper, the change was live without re-packaging a ZIP — and the staging control on Business kept that from becoming a liability, since I could hold edits until I was ready to publish. That is the single biggest operational difference versus Storyline/Rise files that have to be re-uploaded every time a policy sentence changes.

Smaller observations: the tile editor is approachable — I had a working multi-section lesson with interactions within an afternoon, and review links let colleagues comment without accounts, which shortens feedback loops. The analytics are honest about their depth: on dynamic packages you see page- and interaction-level engagement; static exports get you completion and score only. The free plan is a real trial ground (unlimited content creation, 450 credits at signup), but shared content carries the Mindsmith badge and, per G2's read of the tier, sharing and course-length caps apply, so it is for evaluation rather than production. One workflow detail I appreciated in the docs: the SCIM bearer token is shown exactly once at setup, and losing it forces a rotation — the kind of operational detail that tells me the enterprise plumbing was designed by people who have run it.

Where it falls short

Mindsmith does not do offline authoring — it is entirely cloud-based, and there is no desktop application. Collaboration depth is tiered bluntly: live co-editing, version history and staging only exist from the Business tier up, so a small team that needs proper version control pays $65 per author per month rather than $39. The AI credit system needs managing — unused credits do not roll over, generation consumes credits on every tier below Enterprise, and advanced image generation models are gated to higher plans (Flux Ultra is an add-on at the top). AI-generated content needs human verification for factual and pedagogical accuracy, and users report that prompt quality materially affects output. There is no content marketplace and no LMS-side features: no gradebook, no cohort management, no course catalog. Accessibility claims are also inconsistent across the vendor's own surfaces — the help center says WCAG 2.1 AA, marketing pages say WCAG 2.2 — so if accessibility conformance is contractual, get the current VPAT in writing. Finally, the company is young: founded 2022, essentially no public G2 review history as of my check, and third-party review coverage is thinner than the incumbents'. The product is real and the customer list is credible, but you are betting on a smaller vendor than Articulate or iSpring.

Verdict

Mindsmith is one of the more complete AI-first answers to e-learning authoring I have used: real interactive tiles, standards-compliant export, and a maintenance model — dynamic SCORM — that solves a problem every LMS administrator recognises. It is strongest for lean corporate L&D teams that ship and update compliance, onboarding and process training frequently, and weakest for teams that need deep branching logic, offline authoring or enterprise collaboration features without enterprise pricing. At time of writing, per the vendor pricing page, a two-author team runs $78/month on Professional or $130/month on Business, learners free — cheap against Articulate 360's per-author annual licences. I rate it 3.9: the core functionality is deep enough for most everyday courses (the 40% weight), value and usability hold up well, and I discounted for the gated collaboration features, the still-thin independent review record and the young vendor. Worth a pilot this quarter if your backlog is measured in months.

Sources

Pros

  • Dynamic SCORM means policy edits reach learners without re-uploading packages — in my test a text change was live on relaunch with no new ZIP
  • Generation from documents and prompts returns a structured, tile-based draft with assessments, not a wall of prose to rebuild
  • AI conversation tiles let learners practise role-plays and oral exams — a capability static authoring suites do not have
  • Per-author pricing with free learners and a real free tier; at time of writing Professional is $39/author/month billed annually (pricing page)
  • Enterprise plumbing is thought through: SCIM provisioning, SAML/SSO, EU hosting, public API and read-only MCP access by default

Cons

  • Live collaboration, version history and staging require the $65/author/month Business tier — the $39 tier has no version control
  • Static SCORM exports silently degrade: AI conversation tiles are removed and AI-graded short answers fall back to keyword matching
  • AI credits are capped per plan and do not roll over; extra credits only self-serve from the Business tier at $1 per 50 credits
  • No offline or desktop authoring at all — the whole workflow requires a browser and Mindsmith's cloud
  • Founded 2022 with almost no public G2 review history; accessibility claims conflict between vendor surfaces (WCAG 2.1 AA vs 2.2)

Best For

Lean corporate L&D and instructional-design teams that frequently build and update SCORM-based compliance and onboarding training and want AI to draft the first version.
