Fiverr is a marketplace where freelancers sell defined services at a set price, covering design, writing, video, development and marketing.
Positioning: the catalogue model of freelance hiring
Fiverr is a listed company — Fiverr International Ltd, NYSE: FVRR, incorporated in Israel in April 2010, with its principal offices in Tel Aviv and an IPO priced at $21.00 a share on 12 June 2019. That public listing is part of why I take the platform seriously: the numbers below are audited-reported figures, not marketing. But the more useful way to understand Fiverr is structural. Where freelance platforms like Upwork start from a job post and a bidding war, Fiverr starts from a product card. A seller publishes a gig — a defined scope, a price, a delivery window in days, a revision count — and the buyer shops. In my experience that inversion changes everything about how the purchase feels: you are buying a deliverable, not hiring a person, and the platform is built to keep that transaction as close to e-commerce as a service can be.
The marketplace is enormous. Fiverr's investor materials describe "hundreds of categories", and the buyer base is real money: 3.1 million annual active buyers as of 31 December 2025, spending an average of $342 each over the trailing year. Full-year 2025 revenue was $430.9 million, up 10.1% on 2024, with a marketplace take rate of 27.7% and an adjusted EBITDA margin of 21.3%.
What Fiverr actually does
A gig card shows up to three packages — Basic, Standard and Premium — each with its own price, delivery time and revision count. You pay when you order; Fiverr holds the money and releases it after you accept the delivery. Extras (rush delivery, additional formats, extra revisions) and tips are separate payments, and each carries its own service fee. For work that does not fit a card, sellers send custom offers, and orders above roughly $100 can be split into milestones that you approve and pay stage by stage. Hourly contracts exist too, with a $5 order-initiation fee on top of the percentage fee.
Sellers carry levels with published thresholds, which is one of the better vetting tools the platform gives buyers: Level 1 requires 5+ completed orders, 3+ unique clients, $400+ in earnings and a 4.4+ rating; Level 2 requires 20+ orders, 10+ clients, $2,000+ and 4.6+; Top Rated requires 40+ orders, 20+ clients, $10,000+ and 4.7+, plus a manual review. Levels track delivery history, not tested skill — I treat them as a résumé filter, not a quality guarantee.
Fiverr Pro is the upmarket layer. Fiverr Pro Essential is free for clients spending $1,000 or more a year (and free for one year on sign-up), while Pro Advanced costs $129 a month plus tax and adds deferred or monthly payments, an extra discount on sourcing services, and a worker-classification audit. Freelancer sourcing — Fiverr finds and vets the person for you — is listed at $199 on the Pro business page, and Mira, Fiverr's AI matching assistant, now fronts part of that sourcing flow. Beyond gigs, Fiverr has grown a services business (project management, AI training-data work) that reached $133.4 million in 2025, up 50.9% year over year.
My testing notes
Three things I checked closely.
First, the fee math, because the sticker price is not the price. Fiverr's payments help article states a buyer service fee of 5.5% plus a $3.50 small-order fee on purchases under $200 — the Payment Terms state the same structure as of September 2025. I ran the numbers against sample orders: a $50 gig lands at $56.25 before tax (12.5% effective markup), a $20 job lands at $24.60 (23%), a $500 order lands at $527.50 (a flat 5.5%). There is a threshold quirk worth knowing: a $199 order totals $213.45, while a $200 order totals $211.00 — the fixed fee disappears at $200, so anything quoted in the $196.70–$199.99 band is cheaper to push up to $200 with one more revision. And because every payment carries its own fee, a $10 extra bought mid-order costs $4.05 in fees; bundling into one custom offer is measurably cheaper than splitting. Fiverr does show the exact fee at checkout before you pay, which is the saving grace. One rough edge: Fiverr's own help center carries two conflicting schedules — this payments article says $3.50 under $200, an older overview page says $3.00 under $100. They agree at $200 and above, but a company this size should not have two fee pages.
Second, what the prices actually look like across the catalogue. A third-party sampling of 1,579 well-reviewed gigs (4.7 stars or better, 20+ reviews) on the first pages of 44 categories, taken 29 September 2026, found a median category starting price of $55. Logo design had a median start of $27.50 with a middle-50% band of $25–$43.75 and a median delivery of 2.5 days; blog posts and SEO articles started at a $20 median; voice over at $60; Shopify store setup at $120 with 4-day median delivery; Google Ads management at $140 with 5-day delivery. Those are starting-tier prices — the cheapest package on the card. My rule of thumb after browsing the same pages: a serious brief usually lands in the Standard or Premium tier or a custom offer, frequently two to three times the advertised start.
Third, the reputation picture, which is unusually polarised. Trackers sampling Trustpilot in 2026 report Fiverr at 2.4–2.5 out of 5 across roughly 14,000–16,000 reviews, with one review-analysis site noting 49% five-star against 35% one-star and very little middle. G2, which skews to business users, shows 4.4/5 across about 672 reviews; Sitejabber shows 1.5/5. The BBB profile carries an A+ business rating alongside a 1/5 customer score and 183 complaints. The recurring complaint threads are consistent: support replies that read as automated, dispute outcomes that disappoint buyers, and quality that swings hard at any price point.
What Fiverr does not do
The core limitation is that Fiverr sells access to a market, not a quality standard. There is no testing of sellers against a benchmark — levels are earned through volume and ratings — so a gig with a beautiful card and 500 reviews can still deliver work you cannot use. The platform's answer is escrow and a resolution process, not a guarantee: payment is held until delivery, but you have three days after delivery to react before the order marks itself complete and the money releases. That window is short for, say, a website build you need a week to evaluate. There is no blanket money-back promise outside Pro; refunds go case by case through the Resolution Center, and card refunds within 180 days are the practical ceiling that buyers report.
Support is the second gap. The Help Center is available around the clock, but reported handling is English-only, and multiple 2026 review aggregators describe tickets closed by templated replies or slow human escalation. When an order goes wrong on a $2,000 project, "the marketplace is huge" is not a remedy.
Third, the economics push upmarket while the small buyer gets squeezed. Annual active buyers fell 13.6% in 2025 even as spend per buyer rose 13.3% to $342 and GMV from transactions over $1,000 grew 22.8% — Fiverr is deliberately becoming a place for bigger, managed jobs. The company's FY2026 guidance, published with the 2025 results, points to revenue of $380–420 million, a year-over-year decline of 12% to 3%, as the AI-data services boom laps. Meanwhile the small-order fee lands hardest on exactly the small buyer the $5-gig brand was built on. On the sell side, the flat 20% commission is the number freelancers complain about most, and it is priced into what you pay.
Verdict
As a buying system, Fiverr works: defined scope, visible prices and delivery windows, escrowed payment, a level system that at least encodes track record, and enough depth in every category that you can shortlist three sellers in an afternoon. As a quality system, it is a marketplace with all that implies — the vetting is your job, the review window is short, and support is the weakest joint. The fee structure is transparent but punishing at the bottom of the range, and the platform's own numbers say its future is bigger orders, not smaller ones. I rated 4.0 for depth of the catalogue and transaction machinery — 40% of my rubric — with value, support and reputation pulling it below the four-and-a-half a service this mature might otherwise earn. For a founder or small team buying a checkable deliverable, with a clear brief and a willingness to vet, it remains the fastest route from idea to finished work; for anything you cannot verify on delivery, spend the Pro sourcing fee or hire somewhere with accountability built in.

Pros
- Scope, price, delivery window and revision count are fixed on the gig card before you pay, and checkout shows the exact service fee — the $50 gig I priced totaled $56.25 before tax, no surprises.
- Escrowed payments: Fiverr holds the money until delivery, with a 3-day window to request revisions before the order auto-completes.
- Enormous choice with sensible median pricing — a September 2026 sampling of 1,579 well-reviewed gigs across 44 categories found a median starting price of $55 and 2-5 day median delivery.
- Seller levels have published, auditable thresholds (Top Rated needs 40+ orders, $10,000+ earned, 4.7+ rating and a manual review), giving buyers a track-record filter.
- Fiverr Pro layers real services on top: sourcing at $199 per hire, Pro Essential free at $1,000+ annual spend, and Pro Advanced at $129/month for deferred payments and compliance tooling.
Cons
- Small orders are penalized: 5.5% plus a $3.50 fee under $200 makes a $20 job cost $24.60 — a 23% effective markup before tax.
- Quality variance is wide at every price point; levels track delivery history rather than tested skill, so vetting is the buyer's job.
- Support polarizes users — third-party trackers report 2.4-2.5/5 on Trustpilot across 14,000+ reviews, with automated replies and dispute outcomes the recurring complaints.
- Fiverr's own help center publishes two conflicting fee schedules ($3.50 under $200 versus $3.00 under $100), which I could not reconcile from the pages themselves.
- Only 3 days to react after delivery before the order auto-completes and payment is released — short for builds you need time to evaluate.
