ChartMogul turns billing data into subscription analytics, tracking MRR, churn, cohorts and expansion for recurring revenue businesses.

Where ChartMogul sits

ChartMogul solves one narrow, unglamorous problem: turning billing data into subscription numbers you can trust. MRR, ARR, churn, LTV, expansion, contraction, cohort retention — the metrics a SaaS business runs on — calculated the same way every month without someone rebuilding a spreadsheet. For founders and finance leads at recurring-revenue businesses, that consistency is the product. Everything else ChartMogul has added over the years — segmentation, workflows, dashboards, and most recently an AI assistant that answers questions like "show me my MRR waterfall for last quarter" — is in service of that one job.

The market position is clear against the two competitors people compare it with. ProfitWell Metrics (now owned by Paddle) is free but narrower and exists to funnel you toward Paddle's payments stack. Baremetrics is priced similarly but less deep on segmentation. ChartMogul's pitch is the subscription data model itself: it handles tiered plans, multi-component subscriptions, add-ons and usage-based overages in a single revenue model, and it claims thousands of SaaS businesses run on it. That claim is vendor marketing, but the data-model depth is verifiable in the product.

Pricing at time of writing, per chartmogul.com/pricing: free up to $10K MRR (the plan comparison caps free at up to $120K ARR tracked), then paid tiers scaled to the ARR you track inside the platform. Starter runs $69 to $849 per month billed monthly ($57 to $707 billed annually, a 17% saving) for up to three team members, one billing system plus two custom or third-party sources, and up to $10M ARR. Pro runs $119 to $1,439 per month ($99 to $1,199 annually) with unlimited team members, multiple billing systems in one view, two-way CRM sync and warehouse pushes. Enterprise starts at $19,900 per year for companies above $10M ARR. There is a 14-day trial with no card required, and a startup program that discounts any paid plan by $50/month for twelve months.

What ChartMogul actually does

Connect a billing system — Stripe is the common case, and the vendor's integrations page lists 30+ sources including Chargebee, Recurly, Braintree, Paddle and app stores — and ChartMogul ingests subscriptions and invoices, normalizes them into a subscription data model, and calculates the metrics from there. MRR movements are decomposed into new business, expansion, contraction, churn and reactivation, including the fiddly parts: annual plans normalized to monthly, mid-cycle upgrades prorated, multi-currency converted with the exchange-rate impact shown as its own line. That last detail — an "exchange rate impact" row in the customer MRR table — is the kind of thing that separates a subscription-metrics tool from a dashboard bolted onto Stripe.

The analysis layer gives you segments (flexible filters over customers and revenue, saved and reusable), cohorts, LTV and churn calculations, custom charts and dashboards, and per-customer subscription timelines showing every plan event. Workflows automate subscriber-level responses — segment entry and exit triggers for onboarding or cancellation flows. Recent releases push the product toward "subscription intelligence": ChartMogul AI answers natural-language questions over your revenue data (ARR projections, retention diagnosis, competitor mentions in cancellation reasons), and the platform now exposes a REST API, an MCP server and CSV downloads on every plan, with advanced scheduled CSV exports on Pro and up. CRM is a first-class destination: one-way sync on Starter, two-way sync on Pro.

Data quality handling is where ChartMogul earns its keep versus a spreadsheet. Invoices the system cannot cleanly read are routed through a manual review queue via its partner SaaSync for accounting connections, and the data model lets you edit and backfill. For anyone who has reconciled Stripe payouts against a revenue model by hand, this is the part that matters.

My testing notes

Three observations. First, the metric consistency is the whole value and it delivered: MRR movement reconciled month to month in my testing without manual corrections on a straightforward Stripe setup, with new, expansion, contraction and churn lines summing exactly to the reported movement. Where I have seen people lose faith in subscription metrics, it is in tools that silently mishandle annual normalization or proration; ChartMogul's per-customer MRR table makes those flows visible rather than burying them.

Second, setup time is proportional to billing complexity, not team size. A clean single-Stripe SaaS was producing trustworthy dashboards within an afternoon; a multi-system setup — Stripe plus a legacy invoicing source — took longer, mainly deciding how to treat non-subscription revenue and duplicate customers. The one-billing-system limit on Starter is the practical wall here: the moment revenue arrives through two systems, you are on Pro.

Third, on data hygiene, the manual review queue for unreadable invoices is slower than I would like — it is a partner-mediated step rather than an in-product fix — but it beats silently miscounted revenue, which is the failure mode I fear most in this category.

Third, the segmentation is deeper than the dashboards suggest at first glance. Building "LTV by acquisition channel" required joining external lead data as a custom source and then segmenting on it — a workflow the product supports but that takes some reading to set up. The AI assistant handled the MRR waterfall question well and gave a projection with stated assumptions; I would treat its forecasts as directional and the underlying calculated metrics as the source of truth.

What it does not do

This is not a BI tool and not a billing tool. Forecasting beyond the AI's projections is limited — the third-party comparisons I checked rate dedicated planning tools higher — and there is no full general-ledger accounting or revenue recognition of the kind finance teams close books with; a Capterra-based comparison notes revenue recognition is not published as a feature. If you need accrual accounting alignment, expect to push data out to a warehouse or BI tool (Pro and up) and do that work there.

The pricing model itself is a limit worth naming: because plans scale with the ARR you track, your analytics bill grows exactly when your business grows. At $5M ARR the Pro tier runs into the high hundreds per month at time of writing. That is defensible — you are paying for revenue you actually manage — but it is more expensive at scale than a flat-rate tool, and unlike ProfitWell it is not free.

Team limits bite on Starter (three members), and the accounting-source story runs through a partner (SaaSync) rather than native QuickBooks/Xero connections, with invoices the system cannot parse going to manual review. Enterprise features — advanced exports, MCP/API-heavy workflows, dedicated support — sit above $10M ARR at $19,900/year and up. And note that third-party review sites still list older plan names (Launch/Scale/Volume) with different numbers; the vendor pricing page is the only current source I would buy against.

Verdict

For SaaS founders and finance teams who need one number for MRR that everyone believes, ChartMogul is the most complete subscription-metrics product I have worked with, and the free tier up to $10K MRR makes it the default recommendation for early-stage companies. I rate it 4.1 — core functionality depth 4.4 for the subscription data model and segmentation, value 4.0 because ARR-scaled pricing is honest but grows with success, usability 4.2 with dashboards non-analysts can read and a clean setup for single-billing businesses, support and ecosystem 4.0 with 30+ sources, a REST API and MCP server, and reliability 4.1 with a decade-long track record and strong review scores (4.7 on Capterra at time of writing). The buyer is a SaaS founder or finance lead who wants trustworthy recurring-revenue metrics across billing systems without a data team.

Sources

Pros

  • MRR movements reconciled exactly month to month in my testing — new, expansion, contraction and churn lines summed to the reported change with no manual corrections on a Stripe setup
  • Free up to $10K MRR with the full metrics model included, which makes it the obvious starting point for pre-$10K-MRR SaaS
  • The per-customer MRR table shows annual normalization, proration and exchange-rate impact as visible lines instead of burying them in a total
  • Segmentation goes deep with custom sources — I built an LTV-by-acquisition-channel report by joining external lead data, which flat metrics tools cannot do
  • REST API, MCP server and CSV access on every plan, so the data is yours to move even at the free tier

Cons

  • Pricing scales with ARR tracked: the analytics bill grows exactly when the business does, reaching the high hundreds per month by $5M ARR
  • Starter allows only one billing system and three team members, so any multi-system revenue setup forces Pro
  • Accounting connections run through a partner (SaaSync) with a manual review queue for invoices the system cannot parse
  • Forecasting is limited to the AI assistant's projections; serious planning needs a warehouse or BI export on Pro and above
  • Third-party review sites still publish outdated plan names and prices — only the vendor pricing page reflects the current Starter/Pro/Enterprise tiers

Best For

SaaS founders and finance teams who need trustworthy MRR, churn and cohort metrics across billing systems and want to start free below $10K MRR.
