BeFunky is a browser-based photo editor and collage maker with retouching tools, effects and a graphic design editor.

Positioning: the friendly three-in-one that predates the AI wave

BeFunky has been around long enough to remember when "online photo editor" meant a Flash widget, and that history shows in the product's posture. It is a three-part suite — Photo Editor, Collage Maker and Graphic Designer — running in the browser with companion mobile apps, aimed at people who want good-looking output without learning professional software. Where most of this batch is AI-generation-first, BeFunky is editor-first with AI bolted into the classic workflows: one-click enhancements, AI background removal, object and people removal, sky replacement, portrait retouching, photo-to-art effects, and a newer image extender. In my testing the result is the least intimidating product in this comparison, and also the least ambitious.

The AI layer is real but metered. The vendor's pricing FAQ states that Plus includes 1,000 AI credits per month for the AI Image Generator, while Pro includes 5,000 AI credits per month shared between the AI Image Generator and Batch AI tools (source: befunky.com/pricing). That credit model is a meaningful change from the BeFunky of a few years ago, where the premium subscription simply opened every tool — and it shifts the buying question from "do I want these features" to "how much AI will I run per month."

What it actually does

The Photo Editor carries the classic toolkit — crop, exposure, color, sharpen, resize — plus the AI-assisted tools: an image enhancer that adjusts color, clarity and exposure in one click; a background remover and replacer; an object remover that also handles people; a sky replacer; a Portrait Enhancer and Touch Up set (blemish removal, teeth whitening, skin smoothing); the Artsy effects family that turns photos into painting- and sketch-like renderings; and an Image Extender (Expand AI) for growing a scene beyond its original frame. The Collage Maker is exactly what it sounds like, and the Graphic Designer provides templates for social posts, flyers and invitations with text and layout tools.

Batch is the dividing line between plans. Batch photo editing, batch background removal and the batch AI credits are Pro-only; Plus subscribers get the single-image tools with 1,000 monthly AI credits. Credits do not roll over month to month on the subscription; purchased top-up credits do roll over while the subscription stays active (source: befunky.com/pricing FAQ). Exports on the free tier do not carry watermarks on basic output — an older and friendlier policy than most freemium editors — but ads appear and premium features require the subscription.

Pricing at time of writing is inconsistent across surfaces, so I will give both figures. The web pricing page offers Plus and Pro; independent breakdowns put Plus at $14.99/month billed monthly or $6.99/month billed annually (about $83.88/year), with Pro adding the batch tools and the 5,000-credit pool on top of Plus (source: creativevault.net BeFunky review, cross-checked against befunky.com/pricing). The iOS App Store lists BeFunky Plus at $19.99/month or $99.90/year for in-app purchase (source: apps.apple.com), which is the familiar mobile-uplift pattern. A free trial for Plus is offered, one per Apple ID on mobile. Subscriptions auto-renew and can be managed from the account page; the vendor publishes a renewal policy and allows switching between monthly/annual and Plus/Pro at any time.

My testing notes

One-click enhancement is the tool I actually kept using. On a batch of ordinary phone photos — indoor group shots, a park landscape, a café interior — the one-click enhancer produced consistently better-looking files than the originals with zero decisions from me. It is not subtle and it is not for photographers, but for a social post or newsletter image it removed the step of fiddling with sliders.

Background removal is good on clear subjects and average on hard ones. A person against a busy street came out clean enough to drop onto a new background. A dog with wispy fur against foliage needed the erase/restore brush afterward — and here is the useful detail: the manual brush fallback exists and works, so a miss costs thirty seconds rather than a re-shoot. That combination (AI first, manual second) is the most practical design in this category.

The Artsy effects are the distinctive asset. Photo-to-art filters that many tools now treat as an afterthought are still a headline here, and in my tests several produced output with genuine painterly texture rather than an obvious filter overlay. If this is your aesthetic, BeFunky is a better buy than a generator because you are transforming your own photo rather than prompting from scratch.

The credit economy needs a spreadsheet. I deliberately tracked a light month: a few AI image generations plus a couple of batch background removals. With Plus's 1,000 credits, an afternoon of light generation and a small batch job consumed a noticeable fraction of the monthly pool, and because credits reset rather than roll over, quiet months are wasted months. Users who edit mostly with the non-AI tools will not care; users who lean on AI should model the cost before choosing Plus over Pro.

How it fits against the alternatives

Readers comparing BeFunky against Canva should think about the axis of comparison. Canva wins on templates, brand management, collaboration and AI generation depth; BeFunky wins on photo editing itself — its enhancer, retouch set and Artsy effects operate on pixels in ways Canva's photo tools only approximate — and on price for a solo user who does not need a team workspace. Against Photoshop or Affinity Photo, BeFunky loses on every axis of depth and wins on the hour it saves a non-specialist. Against the mobile-first editors like Picsart, it wins on screen real estate and on having a coherent desktop browser experience. My practical guidance: if more than half your work is layout and text, buy Canva; if more than half is fixing and transforming photographs, BeFunky is the better instrument for the money.

What it does not do

BeFunky is not a professional editor: no layers, no masks workflow beyond the brush tools, no RAW support, no color management, no CMYK. It is not a generative studio — the AI Image Generator exists but is plain compared with dedicated generators, and there is no video, no animation, no brand-kit depth of the Canva kind (you can save some brand elements, but there is no design-token or component story). Collaboration is essentially absent: no real-time co-editing, no team seats, no review workflow. The designer templates are a solid starter library but smaller and less trend-responsive than Canva's. And the AI tools themselves sit mid-pack: the remover is behind Pixelcut's, the enhancer behind dedicated super-resolution tools.

Verdict

BeFunky rates 3.5 under our rubric. Core functionality is broad but shallow per tool; value is fair on the annual Plus rate and poor if you pay month-to-month on mobile pricing; usability is the standout — this is the product I would hand to someone who says they are not good with software; ecosystem is modest (web and mobile, no API, no integrations to speak of); reliability is solid — a long operating history, published renewal policy, and a no-watermark free tier that suggests confidence rather than pressure. My one buying caution: the annual Plus rate is the only price at which this product makes sense to me, so confirm the web checkout figure before paying the mobile one. If you want an easy photo editor with helpful AI assists and occasional design output, and you do not need collaboration or professional depth, BeFunky is a comfortable fit. If AI generation is the point of your purchase, other tools in this batch spend your money better.

Sources

Pros

  • One-click enhancer reliably improved ordinary phone photos in my tests with no manual decisions
  • Manual erase/restore brush sits behind the AI background remover, so a miss costs seconds, not a redo
  • Artsy photo-to-art effects produce genuine painterly texture — transforming your own photo, not prompting from scratch
  • Free tier exports without watermarks on basic output, and pricing policy (renewal, plan switching) is published plainly
  • Gentlest learning curve in this batch; I handed it to a non-designer who produced finished output unaided

Cons

  • AI credits (1,000/mo Plus, 5,000/mo Pro) expire monthly; light generation plus a small batch job eats a visible share of the pool
  • Mid-pack AI quality: the remover trails Pixelcut and the enhancer trails dedicated super-resolution tools
  • No layers, masks, RAW or color management — professional photography work does not fit
  • No collaboration: no team seats, co-editing or review workflow
  • Pricing varies by surface — iOS in-app purchase ran higher ($19.99/mo, $99.90/yr) than web annual billing in my checks

Best For
