How to Use Figma AI To Make Sites 10X More Beautiful
Integrates with
Figma is a collaborative design tool for interface design, prototyping and design systems, with AI features and handoff to code.
Positioning
Figma AI is the AI layer inside Figma's collaborative design platform — and the platform has grown well past the design editor it started as. At time of writing a single Full seat bundles Figma Design, Dev Mode, FigJam, Figma Slides, Figma Sites, Figma Make and the on-canvas Figma agent, and every seat on every plan now comes with a monthly pool of AI credits that runs all of it (help.figma.com, "How Figma AI credits work"). What I look for in this category is different from a marketing-design tool: does the AI accelerate real interface design work — components, states, prototypes, handoff — without producing files a senior designer has to rebuild? After several weeks in Figma's AI features my answer is that the image and generation tools are useful polish, while the credit system, not the model quality, is the thing prospective buyers need to understand before committing.
What it actually does
The AI surface spans five areas. First, generation and editing inside Figma Design: the Figma agent chats on canvas, generates design directions and diagrams, searches your files, makes shader effects and fills, adds motion, and creates generative plugins; the Weave tools generate and edit images (logos on product shots, album mockups, style transfer to sketches, palette application) using third-party image models — the help documentation lists ChatGPT Images 2.0 and Google's Nano Banana family with per-image costs from 2 up to 16 credits. Second, standard AI image utilities: background removal (1–5 credits per image), vectorize, resolution boost, erase, isolate and expand (mostly 5–10 credits), plus AI search and layer renaming which are free. Third, Figma Make, which turns prompts into working interactive prototypes and small apps. Fourth, FigJam AI (stickies summarising and clustering free, template and diagram generation 2–24 credits per prompt) and Figma Slides generation. Fifth, Figma Buzz (beta) for templated team content and Figma Specs (beta) for canvas-native specifications — both labelled beta on the pricing page.
The credit economics matter more than the feature list. At time of writing (figma.com/pricing): Starter is free with 150 AI credits per day up to 500 per month; Professional is US$16/month for a Full seat billed annually (US$20 monthly) with 3,000 credits/month; Dev seats are US$12 and Collab seats US$3, each with 500 credits/month; Organization Full seats are US$55/month billed annually with 3,500 credits; Enterprise Full seats are US$90/month with 4,250 credits. Dev, Collab and View seats stay at 500 credits across paid plans. Third-party breakdowns estimate a small Figma Make edit at roughly 30 credits and a full generated app at 100+ (brainstormer.ai), which lines up with my experience: a Full seat on Professional is generous for design work and thin for daily Make usage.
My testing notes
The single most useful thing I measured was credit consumption per feature, because Figma publishes it (help.figma.com) and it makes budgeting predictable. In my testing, a working session of interface design — renaming layers, AI search, a few background removals — cost almost nothing, because the everyday utilities are free or 1–5 credits. The sessions that drained the pool were image generation runs and Figma Make. I generated a set of product-shot mockups with the Weave "add logo to product" tool (19 credits a run) and iterating four variants cost about 76 credits before I had anything usable.
Two specific observations. First, the Figma agent's on-canvas generation is genuinely good at scaffolding: I asked for a settings screen with grouped notification controls and got a properly auto-laid-out, component-aware result with sensible states in under a minute — closer to a junior designer's first pass than a template dump. Where it fell down was consistency with an existing design system; it styled reasonably but did not reliably pick our library components, so a design-systems pass was still required. Second, Figma Make is the fastest path from "describe the flow" to something clickable I have tested in any design tool — an interactive onboarding quiz prototype came back working, with real state handling — but it burns credits at prototype-destroying rates if you iterate, and the produced code is a starting point rather than a maintained codebase.
The AI credit update Figma published in December 2025 (figma.com/blog) added usage tracking and reset dates in-product; in my account the tracker matched the documented per-feature costs closely enough to plan around.
Limits
Figma AI does not remove the craft work. It does not generate complete multi-screen design systems with your components and naming conventions; the agent gets close on single screens and drifts on system fidelity. The image generation models are third-party (OpenAI and Google models per the help docs), so output style is not Figma-native and licensing terms are those providers'. Figma Make output is disposable prototyping code — teams hoping to ship it need a real engineering path. On Starter the 150-credit daily cap means you can genuinely run out mid-afternoon; one testing day I hit it and had to wait for the reset. Several of the newest surfaces — Figma Buzz, Figma Specs, parts of the agent's skills and connectors — are beta, and I treat beta behaviour as provisional. And while the per-seat credit allotments are published, heavier AI usage at team scale means either accepting the caps or negotiating with sales at Enterprise; there is no public pay-as-you-go credit top-up comparable to Canva's at time of writing.
One dimension worth separating out is handoff, since that is where AI features in most design tools quietly stop. In my testing the Dev Mode side held up: inspection, Code Connect mappings and the MCP server let me pull component context into an external coding agent without leaving the file, and the free layer renaming alone saved me from the usual afternoon of tidying before handoff. The seat structure also deserves a note for buyers: at time of writing you can seat a developer at US$12 or a stakeholder at US$3 with 500 AI credits each, which is how I would keep a large review group on AI features without paying Full-seat prices. For students and occasional users, the free Starter plan with its daily cap is enough to learn every AI surface before committing.
Verdict
Figma AI is the strongest package here for working interface designers, because the AI sits inside the tool where the components, prototypes and handoff already live, and the credit accounting is transparent enough to plan around. I rate it 4.3 on the rubric: depth of core functionality is the best in this review set (40% of the score), value is good at the Professional tier where one US$16 seat covers design, prototyping, slides and Make credits, usability is high for anyone who already knows Figma, and the ecosystem and reliability signals — public company reporting, documented per-feature credit costs, mature plugin and community layers — are the most solid I reviewed. The deductions are for credit ceilings that pinch Make users on every plan below Enterprise, beta-surface churn, and system-fidelity gaps in the agent. If your team already lives in Figma, the AI is a reason to stay; if you do not, it is not by itself a reason to move.

Pros
- Transparent, documented credit costs per AI feature (help.figma.com) — I could budget a working session within a few credits of the actual burn
- Figma agent scaffolds single screens with real auto-layout and sensible states in under a minute in my test, inside the file you are already working in
- Figma Make produced a genuinely interactive, state-handling prototype from a text description — the fastest such workflow I have tested
- Every seat on every plan includes AI credits, and low-level utilities (AI search, layer renaming) are free
- One Full seat now spans Design, Dev Mode, FigJam, Slides, Sites and Make (figma.com/pricing), which is unusually good value at US$16/month annual
Cons
- Credit ceilings pinch fast on Figma Make — a full generated app runs 100+ credits against a 3,000/month Professional allowance (brainstormer.ai estimates, matching my burn rate)
- Agent output styled sensibly but did not reliably use our library components, so design-system pass was still needed
- Image generation runs on third-party models (OpenAI/Google per help docs), so output style and licensing are outside Figma
- Starter's 150-credit daily cap ran out mid-afternoon during one of my test days
- Several headline surfaces (Figma Buzz, Figma Specs, parts of the agent) are beta and behave provisionally
