AI writing tool for content that ranks
This AI Tool Writes SEO Optimized Article in Minutes | Writesonic Review (2025)
AI search visibility platform that tracks how your brand appears in AI answers and Google, with SEO and GEO fixes. From $79/mo billed yearly; free trial.
Positioning: this is no longer the tool the tagline describes
If you know Writesonic as an AI article generator, you know a product that no longer exists in that form. The company — founded by Samanyou Garg in San Francisco in October 2021-era timelines notwithstanding (Wikipedia dates founding to October 2020), Y Combinator-backed with a $2.5M seed round — began life in AI content generation, moved into AI-assisted SEO in 2023, shipped an SEO-focused AI agent in early 2025 with integrations into Ahrefs, Google Keyword Planner, Keywords Everywhere and Google Search Console, and by mid-2026 had repositioned itself entirely as an "AI Search Growth Engine." Today the pitch is generative engine optimization (GEO): track how your brand shows up inside AI answers, compare yourself to competitors, and fix what is broken. The AI-writing tagline is legacy; the product is a visibility platform. That matters because everything about the pricing, the interface and the value calculation follows from it.
What it actually does
Writesonic monitors how your brand and competitors are represented across AI answer surfaces — its pricing page names ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews at the tracked tiers, and the company's public materials add Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Grok, Perplexity, DeepSeek and Meta AI to the coverage list. You define prompts (the queries your buyers actually ask), and the system tracks the answers daily: which brands get named, which get cited, what sentiment the answers carry at higher tiers, and where your competitors are recommended instead of you. The other half of the platform is the fix: site audits for SEO and GEO issues, AI-article generation aimed at citation-worthiness, content refreshes, and at the top tier an Action Center that executes changes — on-page and off-page actions per month. Enterprise adds agentic workflows, a named AI search strategist, SSO/SAML, and the compliance bundle (SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, GDPR; the platform is hosted on Microsoft Azure — vendor claims I have not audited).
Pricing at time of writing, from the pricing page (billed annually): a US$79/month tier covering AI Search Visibility with 50 prompts and 50 answers tracked daily, 1 user, 1 project, plus AI articles and site audits; a US$199/month tier described as "SEO + GEO in one platform" with 100 prompts and 300 answers tracked daily; a US$399/month tier with 200 prompts, 600 answers tracked daily, sentiment analysis, a trial of the Action Center (5 off-page + 5 on-page actions per month) and 3 users across 2 projects; and custom Enterprise pricing. Every tier advertises a free trial rather than a free plan.
My testing notes
Two observations. First, the daily answer-tracking is the product's core value and it works as advertised at the numbers that matter: in my trial, the tracker surfaced within days which prompts had ChatGPT naming competitors and not the site I was testing — 50 prompts on the entry tier was enough for a small site's head-term set, and the daily cadence meant I could watch a content change move (or not move) mentions over a couple of weeks. I would not trust any GEO tool's absolute numbers as ground truth — model answers vary run to run — but the directional signal (this prompt mentions us, this one doesn't, this competitor owns that answer) was consistent enough in my runs to act on.
Second, the "fix it from the same dashboard" claim is where the tiers diverge sharply. The entry tier includes site audits and AI articles, which I found genuinely useful — the audit flagged technical and content gaps that plausibly explain missing citations — but the automated Action Center that actually executes fixes is gated behind the top tier and even there arrives as a limited trial (5 off-page and 5 on-page actions per month). In practice, at $79/month you get diagnosis and content tooling, not automation; the agentic workflow story is an Enterprise conversation. For a small business, that gap between "we show you the problem" and "we fix the problem" is the thing to understand before paying.
Living with it day to day
A few notes on the daily experience that the feature grid does not convey. Setting up a prompt set is the real work: the tracker can only answer questions you ask it, and in my trial the difference between a useful dashboard and a noisy one came down to prompt discipline — generic prompts ("best CRM") produced volatile answers, while buying-intent prompts tied to my category produced stable, actionable competitor comparisons. The platform nudges you toward prompt diversification at higher tiers, which tells you the vendor knows this too. Reporting is exportable and client-facing, which makes the agency case plausible: the per-project structure and additional-user pricing at $399/month line up with how agencies actually resell monitoring.
One more thing I noticed: the cadence of the product itself. The What's New feed showed steady additions through the period I watched — sentiment analysis, ads monitoring, Action Center expansions — which is consistent with a company putting its engineering budget behind the visibility platform. That is encouraging for buyers betting on the category, and a warning for anyone holding out hope that the old article generator comes back. It will not.
What it does not do
Writesonic is not a general AI writing assistant anymore, and buyers treating it as one will be disappointed: this is B2B marketing infrastructure priced accordingly. There is no free plan — only a trial — and $79/month billed annually is the entry point, which is real money for a blogger. The tracked-prompt budgets are modest (50 prompts at entry), single-market at that tier, and daily tracking means you will not catch intra-day swings. Answer-level accuracy across AI platforms is inherently unstable: the same prompt can return different brand sets on different runs, so the tool measures probability of presence, not truth. The GEO category itself is young — nobody can tell you definitively why ChatGPT names one brand over another, and Writesonic's own framing of "fix visibility gaps" outruns what anyone publicly knows about these models' retrieval behaviour. Also note the pivot risk: this company has reinvented its product twice in four years, and legacy AI-writing features receive nothing like the attention the visibility platform gets.
Verdict
I rate Writesonic 3.7. On the rubric: the core visibility-tracking functionality is thoughtfully built and, in my trial, delivered the one insight buyers need (40% pillar, strong); value is the weak pillar — no free plan and a $79/month floor against an unproven category, though the entry tier does bundle audits and articles (20%); usability is decent, though the dashboard is dense and the tier gating is easy to misunderstand (20%); the integration and compliance surface (Search Console, Ahrefs, SSO, SOC 2 claims) is mature for a company this size (10%); and reliability signals are mixed — real customers and enterprise claims on one side, a twice-pivoted startup and a category nobody can validate on the other (10%). If you run marketing for a brand that depends on being recommended inside ChatGPT and Perplexity, this is a serious tool to trial. If you want an AI blog writer at a friendly price, this product is no longer for you.

Pros
- Daily prompt-level tracking showed me within days which AI answers named competitors instead of my test site
- Entry tier bundles AI articles and site audits with the tracking — the audit flagged citation-relevant content gaps I could act on
- Trackers span ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews at entry, with Claude, Copilot, Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek and Meta AI named in platform materials
- Search Console, Ahrefs, Google Keyword Planner and Keywords Everywhere integrations ground the GEO advice in real search data
- Enterprise tier carries the compliance bundle buyers need: SSO/SAML, SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and GDPR claims
Cons
- No free plan — trial only, with a $79/month billed-annually floor; overkill for casual bloggers
- The Action Center that executes fixes is gated behind the top tier and arrives there as a limited trial (5 off-page + 5 on-page actions/month)
- 50 tracked prompts and a single market at entry; budgets shrink fast for multi-brand or multi-market teams
- AI answers vary run to run, so the visibility numbers measure probability of presence, not ground truth
- The company has pivoted twice in four years; legacy AI-writing features get little attention relative to the visibility platform
