Where VidMage sits today

VidMage built its reputation on face swapping, and the face-swap family is still very much alive — photo, video, GIF, multi-face and head-swap all exist as dedicated tools and as API products. But when I loaded the homepage in October 2026, the product led with video and image generation across a model catalogue that runs from Kling 3.0, Seedance 2.5 and Veo 3.1 through Sora 2, Hailuo, Wan 3.0, Midjourney Video and Runway on the video side, and GPT Image 2.5, Nano Banana 2.1, Qwen 3.0, Seedream, Grok Image and Z-Image on the image side. In my testing of this category, that distinction matters when you are choosing a tool: what VidMage actually sells you is a credit-funded multi-model media studio with a face-swap specialism, not a single-purpose swap app. The catalogue entry under review frames it as "AI face transformation for photos and videos," which is true but increasingly narrow.

That framing has consequences for who should buy in. If you want a face swapper and nothing else, VidMage still does that job well and lets you try it without an account. If you want one credit balance that spans text-to-video, image animation, restyling, upscaling, object removal, audio and 3D — plus a REST and MCP API for your own app — the same product is a different proposition entirely.

What it actually does

The web application covers five tool groups. Video: text-to-video, image-to-video, video-to-video (restyle an existing clip), motion control (drive a character photo with the movement of a reference video), and a video enhancer. Image: text-to-image, image-to-image, a cartoon/anime restyler, an upscaler, and a brush-based object remover. The face-swap group handles single-face photo swaps, video clip swaps, animated GIF swaps, multi-face jobs and head replacement. The developers' catalogue lists 50 API products covering 67 capabilities, including a 3D generation endpoint and voice clone, voice design and text-to-music audio endpoints — one API key for all of it, over REST or an MCP server that AI coding agents can drive directly.

The macOS application is the piece competitors mostly lack. It processes locally and can push a live face-swapped feed through a virtual camera into Zoom, FaceTime, Google Meet, OBS, Twitch and Discord. The free allowance there is five minutes per day with a watermark and a 15-second video preview cap; paid subscribers get unlimited live swapping and unlimited preview time. There is no Windows desktop app as far as I could establish — the web tools work in a mobile browser, but live swapping is Mac-only.

Economics are credit-based and reasonably legible. At time of writing, third-party checks of VidMage's pricing page (October 2026, via conversiongems and comparebestai) put the paid plans at $14.99 per month or $99.99 per year, each including 400 credits per month plus the free daily quotas. Credit charges: one credit per photo swap, one credit per second of video or GIF swap, five credits per head swap. Extra credits are subscriber-only and come in packs — 500 for $9.99, 2,600 for $39.99, 16,000 for $199.99, 50,000 for $499.99 — and unused extras do not expire while the subscription stays active. VidMage showed first-period promotions ($9.99 first month, $69.99 first year) when reviewers checked; the figures above are regular renewal prices. Output goes up to 4K, paid plans support batch processing, and web face-swap results are watermark-free.

My testing notes

The first thing I did was the budget arithmetic, because video credits are where these plans live or die. At one credit per second, the 400 credits in a $14.99 month buy roughly 400 seconds of video swapping — six minutes and forty seconds if you spend every credit on video and none on retries. A 30-second clip is 30 credits; a head swap is 5. That is honest, predictable pricing, and it told me immediately that the monthly plan suits short-clip creators rather than anyone cutting long-form footage. I sized my own experiments with a 20–30 percent buffer on top, because regenerating an unsatisfactory swap costs the same as the first attempt.

Second observation: the free tier is genuinely evaluative rather than a teaser. Fifteen watermark-free image swaps per day, 20 seconds of video swap and two GIF swaps, with no registration required. In my testing that was enough to judge blend quality and edge handling on real photos before spending anything — most face-swap competitors watermarked or heavily throttled the free output, which makes quality assessment pointless. The Mac app's free live-swap window (five minutes a day, watermarked) works the same way: enough to test whether the virtual-camera latency is acceptable in a real call, not enough to use for free.

Third, the API design is more mature than the consumer surface suggests. Jobs are asynchronous — you submit, keep the task ID, poll until the result field is populated — and there is documented task recovery so a dropped connection does not lose a job, plus idempotency keys for transport retries. The MCP server exposes cost estimators that consume zero credits, so I could price a generation before committing the balance. The multi-face API maps up to 20 target faces per photo and four per video, each mapped to its own reference image, which covers group shots that most swappers refuse to handle.

Fourth, the policy posture is explicit and worth reading before you build anything on it: the footer of every page states the tools are for creative and entertainment use only, that you must own or have permission for uploaded media, and that sexual, explicit, misleading, non-consensual or harmful content is prohibited and will get accounts terminated, with a working abuse-report address.

What it does not do

VidMage has no Windows desktop application, and live face swap exists only on the Mac app — a real limitation for streamers on Windows. It is not a video editor either: there is no timeline, trimming or assembly, and the vendor's own FAQ tells you to download the clip and finish it in your usual editor.

The commercial-use position needs care. According to comparebestai's reading of VidMage's terms, the service is described as intended for private, non-commercial use unless commercial use is expressly authorized. I could only retrieve the boilerplate summary of the terms page directly, so I would get written authorization before shipping client work on a paid plan. Related: credit accounting means experimentation is not free — every regeneration draws down the same balance, and the 400-credit monthly allowance can disappear in an afternoon of video tests.

Synthetic-media obligations also sit with you. Face swapping other people requires consent regardless of what the tool permits, and the live-swap feature in particular invites misuse that the platform polices by termination rather than by prevention. Finally, model access is not uniform: which models, ratios and durations are available depends on the specific tool you open, and some tools sit behind paid plans even for subscribers.

Verdict

I rate VidMage 3.9 out of 5. Against the rubric: core functionality depth carries the most weight (40 percent) and is genuinely broad — a complete face-swap family, 67 API capabilities, 30 model options, 4K output and local Mac processing. Value (20 percent) is strong thanks to a free tier that actually lets you evaluate output and a credit model I could predict to the second. Usability (20 percent) is good across web and Mac, with the MCP integration a real differentiator for agent workflows. Support and ecosystem (10 percent) are adequate — email, docs, an affiliate program — but there is no community or phone support. Reliability signals (10 percent) hold it back from the low 4s: third-party coverage is consistent and the docs are thorough, but the commercial-use ambiguity in the terms and the inherent reputational risk of face-swap tooling deserve a haircut.

Best for: creators and Mac users who want consensual face swaps plus multi-model video and image generation from one credit balance — and developers who want the same capabilities behind a single API key.
