Track Your AI Visibility: What Your Current Tracking is MISSING (Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit)
Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit tracks how often a brand is mentioned and cited by ChatGPT and other AI assistants, and how that changes over time.
Positioning
The AI Visibility Toolkit is Semrush's answer to a question its existing customer base started asking around 2024: when buyers ask ChatGPT instead of Google, does my brand show up? It is an add-on product — priced at $99 per month per domain at time of writing, billed annually, per Semrush's own AI pricing page — that measures and manages how brands appear inside AI-generated answers. The pitch targets SEO teams, agencies and mid-market marketing departments who already live in Semrush and now need to report on a second discovery channel alongside classic rankings. In my testing of this category, the crowded part is mention trackers; the scarce part is tooling that connects AI mentions back to keyword-level actions. Semrush's bet is that its database and its install base let it do the connecting.
What it actually does
The toolkit is a set of reports inside the Semrush interface rather than a separate app. The Visibility Overview produces an AI Visibility Score for any brand, worldwide or by region, showing where you appear in AI-generated answers and where competitors appear instead. Competitor Research ranks you against rivals on the prompts and topics where they get cited and you do not. Prompt Research is keyword research translated to AI: topic-level volume, difficulty and user intent, so an SEO can build a content backlog aimed at AI answers rather than blue links. Brand Performance analyses Share of Voice, sentiment and the narratives AI systems attach to your brand, with AI-generated strategic recommendations on top. Prompt Tracking monitors a fixed set of high-value prompts daily across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and other AI platforms and charts movement over time. Finally, a Site Audit widget called AI Search Health flags technical blockers — the kinds of crawl and rendering issues that keep AI bots from reading your pages.
The base plan at time of writing includes AI visibility reports for any domain, one domain for Brand Performance analysis, mentions from ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity, AI competitor analysis and prompt research, 300 AI Analysis reports per day, and 1,000 daily Prompt Research queries per the Semrush knowledge base. Tracked prompts on the standalone plan number 25, and an additional domain costs a further $99 per month. There is no free trial for the toolkit itself. Semrush One, the bundle of the SEO suite and this toolkit, starts at $199 per month (Starter, with 50 daily prompts and 500 tracked keywords) and scales to $299 (Pro+) and $549 (Advanced) monthly.
My testing notes
Two observations from working with it. First, the workflow promise is real: I took a domain with known AI-answer problems, ran Competitor Research to find prompts where a rival was cited and we were not, exported those prompts into Prompt Research for volume and intent, and had a prioritised content list inside a single session. That loop is the product's actual value — most standalone AI-mention trackers stop at the dashboard and leave you to do this mapping by hand. Second, the daily Prompt Tracking is where I caught the limitations fastest: 25 tracked prompts is a small net for any brand with a serious prompt universe, and burning through them forces painful prioritisation. Competing products at similar prices include materially larger prompt allowances, and Semrush's own bundled plans (50 to 200 prompts) quietly admit the standalone cap is tight.
On data quality: the AI Visibility Score roughly tracked what I found by manually probing the major assistants with a fixed question set, both in which brands surfaced and in the direction of week-over-week movement. It is a directional metric, not an audit — the underlying answer sets shift between probes, and the score is a model output on top of sampled responses. I would present the trend lines to a client and show the raw prompt responses underneath, not lead with the score itself. The AI Search Health checks in Site Audit were practical rather than profound: mostly crawl-access and content-visibility flags, but they found one real blocker on my test site that the standard audit had deprioritised.
A third observation on the reporting side: the Brand Performance narratives — the summaries of how AI systems characterise your company — were the part of the toolkit I did not expect to use and did. Pulling the narrative themes next to a competitor's made content gaps obvious in a way keyword tables never manage, and the sentiment read was calibrated enough to catch a slow drift in one brand's answer framing over a few weeks of tracking. That said, the generated strategic recommendations on top of the data are generic at the edges; I read them for orientation and wrote my own actions. For agency users, the practical win is presentation: these reports go into a client deck without an afternoon of redesign, and the daily tracking history gives you the before-and-after evidence when content work starts moving the needle.
Limits
Price discipline is the first limit. At $99 per month per domain, with extra domains billed the same again, a five-brand portfolio costs $499 monthly before a single keyword is tracked — versus specialist AI-visibility tools that charge similar money for more prompts and more engines. There is no free trial for the toolkit, so the only cheap way in is the seven-day Semrush suite trial or the Semrush One bundle, and the bundle means paying for the full SEO suite whether you need it or not. Agencies passing the cost through to clients should also watch the one-domain Brand Performance cap: a client with both a brand domain and a country domain quickly becomes a two-domain conversation at double the price.
Coverage has caveats. The base plan names four AI sources — ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity — and third-party comparisons note that engine coverage varies by report rather than being uniform everywhere. If your audience uses assistants outside that set (Copilot surfaces, Claude, regional players), you are blind to it. Prompt Research volumes for AI topics are derived metrics; treat them as estimates, not the measured search volumes the classic keyword database gives you. And there is nothing here about actually getting cited — no content generation, no structured-data deployment, no workflow that closes the loop from insight to published change. It measures the AI-search layer; the doing is still yours.
As for maturity: the toolkit is a recent addition to a large platform, and pricing has moved as Semrush experiments with bundles versus add-ons — several independent writeups from earlier in 2026 describe different caps and structures. Lock the terms you are quoted. And note the measurement-versus-action gap compounds over time: the reports will tell you a competitor owns a prompt cluster, but six months of tracking without content changes just produces a longer chart of the same gap. Budget for the work the reports identify, not just the subscription.
Verdict
If your team already runs Semrush, this is the sensible way to add AI-search reporting: the integration, the client-ready reports and the prompt-to-keyword mapping are worth the add-on price, and the company behind it has the support and reliability profile you would want for a category this young. Rated 3.8 on my rubric — strong usability and ecosystem, good core reporting depth, dinged for the 25-prompt cap, per-domain pricing that punishes portfolios, uneven engine coverage and the absence of any action layer. Standalone buyers who do not need the Semrush ecosystem can get more prompts and more engines for the same money elsewhere, and should compare before committing.

Pros
- The Competitor Research to Prompt Research loop produced a prioritised content backlog in one session — the best integration of AI visibility with classic SEO data I have tested
- AI Visibility Score directionally matched manual probing of the major assistants, week-over-week movement included
- Prompt Tracking on Google AI Mode and ChatGPT covers the two surfaces most B2B buyers actually use
- AI Search Health in Site Audit caught a real crawl blocker for AI bots that the standard audit had deprioritised
- Client-ready reporting and a mature platform underneath — onboarding, docs and support are all in place
Cons
- 25 tracked prompts on the standalone plan is a small net; Semrush's own bundles offer 50-200, which undercuts the add-on's limits
- $99/month per domain stacks fast — five domains cost $499 monthly before any SEO usage
- No free trial for the toolkit specifically, so you cannot validate fit without paying
- Engine coverage names four sources and varies by report; Copilot, Claude and regional assistants are not covered
- Pure measurement layer — no content generation, structured data or workflow to turn findings into published changes
