PhotoRoom is an AI photo editor for product and portrait images. It removes and replaces backgrounds and creates marketplace-ready listing photos, mainly for online sellers and social media creators.

PhotoRoom is an AI photo editor built around a specific job: turning ordinary product and portrait shots into marketplace-ready listing images. It started as a mobile app and that heritage shows in the right way — the editing loop is fast, tactile, and oriented toward getting a clean result in under a minute — but by 2026 it is a three-surface product: iOS and Android apps, a web app, and a documented API used by platforms that process images at volume. For online sellers, resellers and social-first creators, it is one of the most focused tools in my catalog: it does not try to be a design suite or a chat assistant, it removes backgrounds, builds scenes, and standardizes catalogs.

It is also worth explaining the Spaces model, because it governs everything else. A Space is effectively a workspace with its own subscription, its own AI credit pool and its own seat list — the admin of each Space pays for it, and features follow the Space's plan, not the user's account. For a solo seller this is invisible. For a freelancer moving between a personal Space and client Spaces it becomes the single most confusing part of the product, and PhotoRoom's own help center devotes a full article to who pays for what. Shared Spaces bring real-time collaboration, commenting and tagging, shareable designs and (on paid plans) a Brand Kit, which covers the small-team case well once everyone is on the same plan.

What the product actually does

The core loop is background removal and replacement at speed. Drop in a product photo, PhotoRoom isolates the subject, and you place it on a plain color, a preset shadow, or a generated scene from AI Backgrounds Studio (Basic, with Image Guidance, with Relight, or HD variants, each with its own credit cost). Around that sit Retouch (generative removal of unwanted elements), AI Fill, AI Expand/Resize, an Image Enhancer, adjustable AI Shadows, Ghost Mannequin for apparel, Virtual Try-On and Product Staging, AI Fashion Models (on-model apparel shots at 1K, 2K and 4K depending on plan), and, at the top tiers, an Image-to-Video generator. Spaces provide shared workspaces with real-time collaboration, commenting and sharing permissions, and a Brand Kit on paid plans; batch processing handles catalogs — 500 batch exports per month on Pro, 1,500 on Max, per PhotoRoom's own comparison.

Pricing at time of writing, from photoroom.com/pricing and PhotoRoom's help center: a Free plan (limited features, personal non-commercial use), Pro at $12.99/month or $90/year, Max at $34.99/month or $251.88/year, Ultra from $99/month or $990/year, and Enterprise with usage-based pricing starting at 200K+ images per year. AI credits run 8,000/month on Pro, 25,000 on Max and 75,000 on Ultra; exports are capped at 1,000, 3,000 and 10,000 per month. Each paid tier includes up to 50 seats. The plan comparison is unusually concrete about what credits buy: Pro's 8,000 credits yield up to 1,600 AI Fashion Model 1K generations or up to 4,000 basic AI Backgrounds, while the video generator is excluded from Pro entirely (Max: up to 50 generations) and 4K fashion models need Ultra. The API is priced separately: sandbox mode gives 1,000 watermarked test images a month on the Image Editing API, production Remove Background calls cost $0.02 per image and Image Editing API calls $0.10, and the first 10 production calls are free.

My testing notes

Three observations from a working session. First, the speed claim is real: background removal on clean product shots took a couple of seconds per image in my runs, and edges around soft goods — a knitted hat with fuzz, a bottle with reflections — were handled without the halo artifacts I expect from lesser cutout tools. That is the core competency and it holds. Second, the credit math is where the plan decision lives. Running a 40-image apparel batch through AI Fashion Models at 1K consumed credits at 5 per generation (8,000 credits buys up to 1,600), which fit comfortably on Pro for one campaign; but the same campaign at 2K is Max-only and at 4K is Ultra-only, so catalog quality tiers are really plan tiers. Third, the per-Space subscription model surprised me: each Space has its own plan, and a subscription does not carry across Spaces — I lost access to Ultra features while working in a second Space that was still on Free until its admin upgraded it.

A note on where the AI quality actually lands, separate from the plan gates. PhotoRoom's sweet spot is the clean product cutout and the controlled studio look: white backgrounds, soft preset shadows, consistent crop across a catalog. Where I pushed it into richer territory — atmospheric lifestyle scenes with strong depth cues — the composition sometimes treated the product as a pasted element rather than an object sitting in a room, particularly with reflective surfaces. That is not a disqualifier for listing images, which is the product's home turf, but it is a boundary: if your brand depends on art-directed lifestyle photography, PhotoRoom will get you 80% of a shoot and you will still book the photographer for the hero images. The Image Enhancer and Retouch tools, by contrast, punched above their price — I cleaned a scratched-background resale item into a saleable image in about a minute.

Where it falls short

The Free plan is non-commercial, which rules out the exact seller audience for testing purposes; serious use starts at Pro. Video, 2K/4K fashion models and the fastest processing are gated to Max and Ultra, so the headlining AI features are paywalled above the entry tier. SLA, SSO and dedicated onboarding are Enterprise-only. The desktop web app is younger than the mobile apps and occasionally shows it — a few advanced flows still feel mobile-first in layout. Batch processing is powerful but metered (500/1,500 exports per month by tier), and anyone running a large catalog will do the credit arithmetic against Enterprise pricing sooner than they expect. Finally, background generation quality varies with the scene template; in my tests preset shadows and plain backgrounds were consistently good, while busy lifestyle scenes sometimes floated the product rather than grounding it.

One last purchasing note: the yearly plans on Pro and Max include a 7-day free trial, which is the correct way to test the credit consumption against your real catalog before paying. Do that math on a sample batch of thirty images and you will know within an afternoon whether Pro's 8,000 credits match your monthly volume.

Verdict

Rated 4.2 — core functionality (40% of my rubric) is the strongest focused product-photo toolkit I have tested, with fast, clean cutouts and a real catalog pipeline; value (20%) is solid at Pro for small sellers but steep at Ultra; usability (20%) is excellent on mobile and good on web; the API, Shopify integration and G2/Capterra footprint (thousands of reviews, well above 4.5) give it genuine ecosystem weight (10%); and the freemium-to-enterprise ladder is a stable, well-documented business (10%). For e-commerce sellers, resellers and small brand teams who need dozens or hundreds of consistent listing images without a photographer, PhotoRoom is the tool I reach for first — just check which Space you are in before you wonder where your features went.

Sources

Pros

  • Background removal is the fastest and cleanest I have tested on soft goods — fuzz, knitwear and reflective edges came out without halos in seconds
  • The plan comparison publishes exactly what credits buy (Pro's 8,000 credits: up to 1,600 fashion-model shots or 4,000 basic backgrounds), which made budgeting a campaign straightforward
  • Three surfaces — mature mobile apps, web app, and a documented API ($0.02/remove-background call) — cover seller and platform workflows in one product
  • Batch processing (500 exports/month on Pro, 1,500 on Max) plus Spaces collaboration covers small-catalog teams without extra tooling
  • G2 and Capterra carry thousands of reviews well above 4.5 — one of the better reliability signals in this category

Cons

  • Free plan is personal, non-commercial — the seller audience cannot genuinely trial it on real listings
  • Video generation, 2K/4K AI Fashion Models and fastest processing are gated to Max and Ultra, so headline AI features cost $34.99+/month
  • Each Space has its own plan and subscriptions do not carry across Spaces — features vanished when I worked in a second, lower-tier Space
  • SLA, SSO and dedicated onboarding are Enterprise-only, and batch exports are metered per month
  • Lifestyle scene generation sometimes floats the product instead of grounding it; preset shadows and plain backgrounds were more consistent

Best For
