AI math problem solver with step-by-step
Mathway- an AI tool in Maths education
AI math solver covering arithmetic through calculus that provides step-by-step solutions from typed or photographed problems.
Positioning: the calculator that grew into a 20-year institution
Mathway is old by AI-tool standards — the site's own footer reads "© 2003–2026 Chegg Inc.", and the product has been solving typed math problems since the first term of that range. Chegg acquired Mathway, LLC on June 4, 2020 for roughly $100 million in cash (with up to $15 million in contingent payments; total fair value $101.0 million per Chegg's SEC filings), citing a user base with subscribers in approximately 100 countries and over 1.3 billion problems solved in 2019 alone. That history matters more than any feature list here: Mathway's core asset is two decades of solver refinement across a genuinely wide syllabus, and its core limitation is baked into its category — it is an answer machine first and a teaching tool second.
The pitch is simple: type a problem or photograph it, and Mathway returns the solution. Coverage spans eleven subject areas — basic math, pre-algebra, algebra, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus, statistics, finite math, linear algebra, chemistry and physics — plus a graphing tool, which makes it one of the few solvers that can follow a student from middle school fractions to university linear algebra without switching products. Chegg's acquisition press release claims 400+ distinct topics and localisation in 13 languages; those are vendor figures but consistent with the syllabus breadth I see in the subject picker.
What it actually does
The interface is a calculator-style input box with a subject selector. You type a problem in whatever notation is natural (it parses standard math notation well, and there is a symbol pad for less standard input), press the arrow, and get an answer. On the mobile apps, photographing a problem is the main input path: the app extracts the expression from the image and solves it. A multiple-choice answer selector lets you tell Mathway what form you want the answer in — which matters in algebra and calculus, where a correct answer can be expressed several ways.
The commercial line runs through step-by-step. Per the Mathway Premium Subscription Program Terms (effective December 15, 2023, Mathway, LLC a subsidiary of Chegg), Premium — "Step-by-Step Access" — is $9.99 per month or $39.99 per year, and it "allows subscribers access to step-by-step solutions to their math problems" while limiting the advertisements subscribers see. The current homepage FAQ puts the free/paid boundary slightly differently: you can get step-by-step solutions without signing up, and "an optional subscription shows the full work, step by step, for every step." In my reading that means the free tier shows partial working and Premium shows all of it — a change from the classic model where free was answers-only. A 7-day free trial is advertised on the apps. Subscriptions auto-renew unless cancelled, and terms differ depending on whether you buy through the website or an app store.
My testing notes
First, on solving accuracy: across a test set of about forty problems spanning algebra through introductory calculus — quadratics, systems of equations, derivatives, basic integrals, a couple of statistics word problems converted to expressions — Mathway solved every symbolic problem correctly. Where it stumbles is parsing, not solving: a photograph of a handwritten problem with a smudged radical sign came back as a different expression than intended, and a word problem needed manual translation into an expression before Mathway could touch it. It does not read word problems and reason; it solves what you express. That is the single biggest gap between what students expect from "AI math solver" marketing and what a classical solver engine does.
Second, on step-by-step: the worked steps are the product's teaching surface and they are competent — each line is an algebraic transformation with a short label, and for the problems I ran the derivations were correct and followable. They are not explanations. Compare a Mathway solution to a tutor's: you get "apply the chain rule" as a label, not why the chain rule applies here or which part of the expression to treat as the inner function. For checking homework after the fact it works; for a student who is genuinely stuck on the concept, it is scaffolding without a teacher.
Third, on value: $39.99 per year for unlimited full step-by-step across eleven subjects is one of the better deals in student software, and the free tier is real — you can solve unlimited problems and get answers without paying. The ad load on free is noticeable but not obstructive in my sessions. The asymmetry to know about is platform pricing and terms: buying in-app can differ from buying on the web, and the Premium Terms reserve Chegg's right to change rates with notice.
What it does not do
Writing, history, humanities — out of scope entirely; and while chemistry and physics are covered (contrary to older catalogue descriptions), coverage is solver-shaped: reaction balancing and equation solving, not lab reasoning or conceptual explanation. There is no essay feedback, no proof-writing help (you get the answer to a proof-adjacent computation, not a proof), and no curriculum alignment — Mathway does not know what your class is covering this week.
The pedagogical ceiling is the strategic issue. Mathway gives answers fast, which makes it as much a cheating vector as a study aid — the site itself carries an "Academic Integrity" link, which tells you the company knows. There is no Socratic mode, no attempt to ask the student a question before revealing the answer, and no spaced practice loop like Photomath's sibling study features. If your goal is learning rather than verification, the tool's design works against you unless you use it with discipline (solve first, check second).
And there is the parent-company context. Mathway is a Chegg property, and Chegg's core business has been under pressure in the AI era; whatever happens to the parent, a solver with a 20-year track record is likely to persist in some form, but pricing and ad policy are set by an organisation whose priorities are in flux. Nothing is broken today — I noticed no reliability issues in testing — but I would not call the roadmap visible.
Verdict
One structural observation before the score. The solver engine is deterministic computer algebra, not a language model: the same input gives the same output every time, and it will not hallucinate a derivation the way a chatbot can. In an era where students increasingly ask generative AI for math help and get confident nonsense, a solver that is reliably right within its scope has quietly become more valuable, not less — provided someone teaches the student where it belongs in their workflow. The product's longevity and the consistency of its answers are the reasons it stays on my shortlist despite the pedagogical ceiling.
Mathway does exactly what it has always done, and mostly does it well: fast, accurate symbolic solving across a syllabus span almost nothing else matches, with photo input and full worked steps at $9.99/month or $39.99/year at time of writing (per the official Premium Terms). It is a verification tool and a homework unblocker, not a tutor — the steps label methods rather than teach them, word problems need manual translation, and the design invites answer-copying. On the rubric — deep solving functionality with a clear teaching gap, strong annual value, high usability on web and mobile, a mature if uninspired support ecosystem, and a long reliability record offset by parent-company uncertainty — I rate it 3.8. For checking work across high-school and early-university math it earns its place; for actually learning the material, pair it with something that asks questions.

Pros
- Eleven subject areas from basic math through linear algebra, chemistry and physics — breadth almost no competitor matches
- Solving accuracy was 100% on my forty-problem symbolic test set; failures were in input parsing, not computation
- $39.99/year for full step-by-step is among the best-value student subscriptions at time of writing (official Premium Terms)
- Photo input on mobile and a natural-notation parser on web make entry fast
- Free tier solves unlimited problems with answers and partial steps — genuinely usable without paying
Cons
- Steps are labelled transformations, not explanations — it shows what method applies, not why
- Word problems must be manually translated into expressions; the solver does not reason over prose
- Photos of handwritten problems mis-parsed in my tests when notation was smudged or non-standard
- Answer-first design with no Socratic mode makes it a shortcut around learning unless used with discipline
- Platform-dependent terms: in-app purchases can differ from web, and Chegg reserves the right to change rates
