Where LegalZoom sits

LegalZoom is the most recognised name in online legal services in the United States — a listed company (Nasdaq: LZ) that has been selling legal paperwork to consumers and small businesses since its founding in 2001, and which went public in 2021. It is included in an AI tools catalog because of a genuine shift in the last two years: LegalZoom has moved parts of its product stack onto large language models and announced partnerships with both OpenAI and Anthropic. But I want to frame this review accurately from the start. LegalZoom is a legal services platform with AI being threaded into it, not an AI product with legal features. If you are shopping for a generative drafting assistant, this is a different category; if you are shopping for business formation and compliance with AI-assisted guidance layered on top, read on.

What it actually does

The core of the business is small-business legal work: LLC formation, S corp and C corp formation, nonprofit formation, trademark registration, registered agent service, legal document templates with e-signature, and access to a network of independent attorneys. The formation funnel is three tiers. At time of writing, the vendor's LLC page lists Basic at $0 plus state filing fees (articles of organization only), Pro at $249 plus state fees, and Premium at $299 plus state fees. Pro and Premium add items like an EIN, an operating agreement, and — per NerdWallet's breakdown — a year of access to 150+ customizable legal documents and unlimited eSignatures. Around the formation core sit recurring services: registered agent at $249 per year, a Business Attorney Plan at $39.09 per month on a one-year commitment ($43.17 per month on six months) including phone consultations, document review, unlimited forms and an annual business evaluation, single legal forms at $59 or an unlimited form library at $99 per year, and trademark registration at $899 plus federal filing fees. S corp and C corp formation start at $149 plus state fees; nonprofits at $99 plus state fees.

The AI layer has arrived through two channels. Internally, LegalZoom has built AI tooling for its own operations and product flows — in October 2025 the company published a piece on its "AI call simulator", used to train and evaluate the humans who advise customers, and its product questionnaires now describe catching inconsistencies and auto-populating state-specific forms. Externally, it has announced platform collaborations: in August 2025, a collaboration with OpenAI's ChatGPT placing LegalZoom's products inside ChatGPT's business-formation flows, and in February 2026, a release describing "bringing attorney accountability to Claude" — an integration with Anthropic's Claude that connects model-drafted work to LegalZoom's attorney network. Those announcements tell you where the company is heading: distribution through AI assistants, with its filing infrastructure and lawyer network as the execution layer behind them.

My testing notes

When I worked through the formation funnel and the pricing surfaces, three things stood out.

First, the $0 Basic plan is genuinely zero for LegalZoom's own fee — the number on the page matches the checkout structure, and state filing fees (a $40–$500 range depending on state, per multiple third-party cost breakdowns) pass through regardless of provider. That said, Basic is thin: articles of organization filed with the state and little else. Every convenience that makes formation painless — EIN, operating agreement, expedited handling — lives in the $249 and $299 tiers or in add-ons. The pricing architecture is a classic funnel, and I would budget for Pro or the equivalent add-ons before calling LegalZoom cheap.

Second, the recurring costs are where the real spend lands. Registered agent service at $249 per year and the Business Attorney Plan at roughly $39–$43 per month dwarf the one-time formation fee over a three-year horizon. One third-party review (freenetlaw) flags Pro's auto-subscription behaviour as a specific complaint — the kind of detail worth checking in checkout before you enter a card. I treat that as one reviewer's account rather than established fact, but it is consistent with the plan structure I observed. Another review (Venturesmarter, June 2026) reports a real formation — a Maine LLC — completed for $175 total, which lines up with the Basic tier plus a low state filing fee.

Third, on the AI specifically: the most visible AI in the product today is in the questionnaire and intake layer rather than in open-ended legal drafting. The headline AI announcements are partnerships (OpenAI in August 2025, Anthropic in February 2026) and internal tooling (the October 2025 call simulator), not a chat-with-your-documents feature in the customer dashboard. In my read of the current product surfaces, a customer forming an LLC interacts mostly with structured questionnaires and human attorneys, with model assistance humming underneath. That is a defensible design — legal filings reward structure — but buyers expecting a Harvey-style research assistant will not find one here.

The service breadth is real, though. NerdWallet's hands-on review confirms the range covers formation, trademarks, patents and copyright, business tax advice, and attorney consultations, and highlights the Business Attorney Plan's annual business evaluation and monthly copyright registration as unusual inclusions at this price point. For a freelancer or a solo founder, that breadth means one vendor for the boring half of running a business.

What it does not do

LegalZoom does not handle complex legal matters — litigation, nuanced M&A, contested IP — and it says as much by routing such work to its attorney network at separate cost. The platform is US-only; filings are with US state and federal agencies, and the attorney network is licensed per state. The lawyers are independent contractors rather than LegalZoom employees, so quality varies by match, and the network model means you are buying access, not a dedicated counsel. On the AI side, there is no public API for the model features, no self-serve generative drafting product you can buy standalone, and no published benchmarks on the accuracy of its form auto-population. The AI partnerships announced with OpenAI and Anthropic are distribution and workflow collaborations; at time of writing I could not verify from primary sources how much autonomous legal reasoning happens inside them versus structured data entry. I have left that as an open question rather than assume.

Who the attorney network is actually for

One structural point is worth dwelling on, because it decides whether the subscription makes sense. The attorney network is not staff counsel; it is a panel of independent lawyers matched to your state and matter type. For the routine work LegalZoom sells — a contract reviewed, a question answered, a compliance check — that panel is a better deal than hiring a firm on hourly terms. But the annual business evaluation included in the one-year plan is only as good as the reviewer you are matched with, and unlike a firm relationship, continuity across matters is not guaranteed. I would treat the plan as insurance for routine questions rather than as a substitute for counsel who knows your business in depth.

Verdict

Judged as a small-business legal services platform, LegalZoom is broad, brand-trusted, and genuinely useful for formation and routine compliance. Judged as an AI tool — the frame of this catalog — it is early: the AI shows up in intake flows, internal training tooling, and partnerships with ChatGPT and Claude rather than as a product surface you can evaluate head-to-head with legal AI copilots. I rate it 3.4 — solid but shallow AI-assisted core functionality (40% pillar), good value for formation and attorney access relative to a law firm (20%), a questionnaire-driven usability that beginners will appreciate (20%), a large attorney network and long operating history (10%), and public-company reliability signals with some subscription-upsell friction reported in third-party reviews (10%). If you need an LLC filed competently and a lawyer on call, this remains one of the default choices. If you need AI depth, the interesting part is where LegalZoom is heading, not where it is.
