Wordtune
Pros
- + Rewriting preserves meaning and hedging better than cheap paraphrasers — in my test it cut 30% of word count without dropping a single caveat
- + Summarizer handles documents, articles, webpages and YouTube videos; summarizing a 20-minute video into bullets saved me a rewatch
- + Free plan is real enough for light daily editing (10 rewrites/day, unlimited spelling and grammar fixes) without a card
- + Extensions for Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Arc plus an iPhone keyboard app cover where most writing happens
- + 30% discount for students, educators and non-profits through support (wordtune.com/plans)
Cons
- - AI21 has reportedly discontinued consumer development (Calcalist, April 2026) and cut roughly 110 of 180 staff — the tool is effectively unmaintained
- - Free plan's 10 rewrites per day ran out in about 20 minutes of normal editing in my test
- - No long-form generation, brand-voice training or plagiarism checking — sentence-level only
- - No refunds, no Android app, no Safari extension; the Teams tier was retired so there is no self-serve multi-seat plan
- - Free summarizer allotment is 3 per month; heavier summarizing requires the paid tiers
Writefull
Pros
- + Trained on scientific text: in my testing it flagged three real grammar errors in a dense methods paragraph and raised zero false alarms on standard statistics shorthand
- + Language search returns example sentences from published papers — genuinely useful for choosing between two plausible phrasings
- + Lives where academics write: Word add-in and deep Overleaf integration (including AI Assist distribution via Digital Science)
- + Academic-specific widgets general tools lack: abstract generator, title generator, Supercomplete context completion
- + Free tier by default with a real annual option at $65.52/year at time of writing per writefull.com/pricing
Cons
- - English-only — its own models do not cover other languages
- - Revise and Cite come only with institutional licences, so individuals cannot get the complete suite
- - Published pricing is a time-limited launching offer (33% off); the stable rate is not yet established
- - Paraphrase suggestions occasionally flattened technical phrasing in my testing — batch-accepting them is a mistake
- - Billing runs through Gumroad, which surprises people checking their bank statement
