StudyX
Pros
- + The free tier is real and generous: a logged-out test got six full step-by-step solutions with no sign-up, matching the homepage's 'No sign-up' promise — rare in this category.
- + The answer format is exactly right for homework unsticking: final answer, numbered explanation steps, and a Sai chat panel for follow-ups on the same page.
- + Web pricing is student-friendly at time of writing — Plus works out to $5.83/month on annual billing ($69.99/year) with 3,000 credits plus 30 daily refresh credits (studyx.ai/plan, rendered 15 Oct 2026).
- + The study-materials pipeline covers real workflows: PDFs, slides, video, YouTube links and live lecture transcription into notes, spaced-repetition flashcards and quizzes across 50+ subjects.
- + Model choice exists (auto-routing plus a deeper Pro reasoning mode), so you can trade speed against depth per question.
Cons
- - iOS billing is predatory: the $6.99 weekly plan annualizes to $363.48 versus $69.99 on the web for the same tier, and the App Store shows two conflicting yearly Plus prices ($77.99 and $36.99).
- - Refund policy contradicts itself three ways — footer says 3-day money-back, FAQ says non-refundable, Terms say all payments final — so the guarantee is unconfirmed.
- - Prices are injected client-side; the served HTML of studyx.ai/plan contains no price text at all (verified 24 Oct 2026), making pricing unauditable without running their code.
- - The site sells an AI humanizer and professional-exam answer solvers while its Honor Code tells students not to submit purchased answers — an integrity contradiction I can't square.
- - Answers never signal uncertainty, one tested solution leaked raw KaTeX error code mid-steps, and support appears unresponsive (2.6 TrustScore on Trustpilot, no company replies).
Brainscape AI Flashcards
Pros
- + Confidence-Based Repetition is perceptibly better tuned than binary spaced repetition — in my two-week block, interval behaviour tracked my actual recall
- + AI deck generation turns dense notes into a clean 20-card deck in under a minute in my test; free tier includes hundreds of AI-generated cards
- + Genuinely free self-study: unlimited manual creation and studying of your own cards forever, no ads
- + Certified expert-curated decks are noticeably cleaner and better organised than user decks in my comparison on exam subjects
- + Web Pro at $7.99/month (annual billing) is fair for the depth of engine and library on offer
Cons
- - Text-to-speech, promised for 2025, had still not shipped as of December 2025 App Store reviews — a real gap for language learners
- - iOS in-app Pro costs $19.99/month versus $7.99/month on the web for the same product; subscribing through Apple is a bad deal
- - Studying Certified and other users' public decks is Pro-only, so 'free forever' does not cover the library
- - No PDF/PowerPoint course import and no images or audio on free-tier cards
- - Certified coverage is uneven outside popular subjects; niche topics leave you with variable-quality user decks
