- - Fallback to cheaper models when you run out was removed in the 2026-06-01 usage-based transition — credits run out, work stops or you top up
- - Annual Pro/Pro+ subscribers stay on old premium-request pricing until expiry, then drop to Copilot Free unless they actively upgrade
- - In-editor context is narrower than Cursor's repo-indexed agent on large codebases in my experience
- - Requires a GitHub account throughout; no support for GitHub Enterprise Server
- - Some premium models (Claude Fable 5/5.1) retain data by default per the docs, with ZDR access for approved enterprises only through end of 2026

- + Performance held up where it counts: instant startup and fluid multi-cursor editing on a large Rust repo in my testing, with the AI panel closed and no model configured
- + Free Personal plan is genuinely livable — 2,000 accepted edit predictions lasted several days of heavy editing in my runs, and unlimited BYOK/local-model usage carries no Zed markup
- + Agent Client Protocol runs external agents (Claude Code, Codex CLI) as first-class citizens inside Zed's UI with thread-level change review
- + Native collaboration with live cursors, conflict-free sync and in-project screen sharing worked cleanly across two machines in my test
- + Real cross-platform support now: macOS, Linux and official Windows since October 2025 (DirectX backend) — the old 'Mac only' limitation is gone
Cons
- - Extension catalog is hundreds, not tens of thousands — VS Code-specific extensions may not exist
- - Pro's $5 token allowance is not a spending ceiling: overage bills at provider list price +10% with a default $10/month incremental cap
- - Business plan lacks SSO, SAML and SCIM (planned, not shipping at time of writing), blocking some enterprise rollouts
