DSPy

Pros

  • + GEPA reflective optimization beat my hand-written prompt on a labeled extraction-and-answer task in my testing, and compiled to an inspectable prompt plus demonstrations I can commit to git.
  • + Provider portability is real: the same program ran against a hosted frontier model and a local model with only LM configuration changed (my testing; the design goal of writing logic as code).
  • + The optimizer suite is genuinely deep — GEPA (arXiv:2507.19457), SIMBA, GRPO via Arbor, BootstrapFewShot and MIPROv2 — covering prompt, demonstration and weight optimization paths.
  • + Assertions and suggestions (dspy.Assert/Suggest) add program-level constraints with backtracking, which fixed a recurring schema-violation class in my pipeline.
  • + MIT-licensed, actively released (3.4 line current, 113 releases at time of writing) with ~38,600 GitHub stars — an established project, not a research artifact.

Cons

  • - Steep learning curve: signatures, modules, metrics and optimizer budgets must all be grasped before the first compile, and 2.x-era tutorials mislead on the 3.x API.
  • - Optimization runs cost tokens — reflective optimizers call the model repeatedly over your dev set, and budgets are not managed for you.
  • - Results are gated on metric and example quality; a fuzzy metric compiles a confidently wrong program and small dev sets overfit.
  • - Debugging crosses four layers (metric, examples, composition, optimizer), which is harder than reading a bad prompt when something breaks.
  • - Fast release pace moves APIs; pin versions and treat upgrades as explicit work.

Langfuse

Pros

  • + MIT-licensed core with free, unrestricted self-hosting — only named enterprise features like audit logs and SCIM need a licence key
  • + A 5-seat team at 100k traces runs roughly $69/month versus about $420/month for the main closed alternative (Panoply's independent estimate, consistent with my bills)
  • + OpenTelemetry-native tracing across OpenAI SDK, LangChain, LlamaIndex, Pydantic AI, Vercel AI SDK, CrewAI and raw OTLP
  • + Graduated usage pricing is transparent and cheap: worked examples on the pricing page match my own invoices (200k units on Core = $37/month)
  • + Dataset-backed evaluation with the langfuse/experiment-action GitHub step let me gate prompt changes in CI on a real test set

Cons

  • - v3 self-hosting needs Postgres, ClickHouse, Redis and S3 where v2 ran on one container — a four-service system to operate
  • - Heavy agent traces render slowly in the UI (issue threads #10391 and #9933 match the multi-second loads I measured)
  • - Online evaluations score a sample of traffic rather than everything, so rare failure modes can go unscored
  • - UI-configured evaluators cannot be triggered programmatically for scheduled pipelines in my setup
  • - Owned by ClickHouse, Inc. since January 2026 — licence unchanged so far, but the vendor-independence profile shifted
