Descript
Pros
- + Transcript-based editing is the fastest cut I've used on spoken content — I trimmed a 40-minute interview to 28 minutes by deleting text, and the cuts and reorders landed exactly where the transcript indicated
- + Studio Sound rescued a laptop-mic recording to near-studio quality in one pass; filler-word removal stripped ums and false starts cleanly
- + Underlord chains multi-step edits from plain-language instructions (filler removal, silence cuts, Studio Sound, captions, clip suggestions) and drafts show notes and chapters
- + Transparent, published metering: 10/30/40 media hours and 400/800/1,500 AI credits per month by tier, plus documented top-up prices on Creator and Business
- + Company fundamentals are solid — founded 2017, ~$100M raised with the OpenAI Startup Fund leading the $50M Series C, CEO transition handled cleanly in 2025
Cons
- - Hobbyist is the only paid plan without top-ups: hit 10 media hours mid-month and you wait or upgrade
- - Media hours are consumed by raw footage including retakes and multi-cam, not finished length — budgeting by output length will under-buy
- - Editor performance degrades on long multi-track projects; big files lag
- - Overdub voice cloning quality varies with context — fine for a fixed word, unreliable for expressive lines
- - Translation proofreading and native-sounding dubbing voices are Business-only; Creator dubs 30+ languages unchecked
CleanShot
Pros
- + Scrolling capture stitched a ~12,000px documentation page into one image with only a duplicated sticky header as an artifact
- + Studio Mode (since 5.0, Sept 2026) turns recordings into finished screencasts — smart zooms, cursor smoothing, trimming — with Apple Silicon export of a 2-minute clip finishing in under a minute in my test
- + On-device text recognition copied a config block cleanly out of a screenshot and reads QR codes
- + $35 one-time Basic license (1 year of updates, optional $19/year renewal) keeps the app usable without a subscription
- + 30-day money-back guarantee plus 30% educational discount lower the entry risk
Cons
- - macOS-only with no Windows version planned
- - No free trial — the buy-then-refund model is the only way in
- - Team, security and branding features (SSO, SCIM, password-protected links, custom domain) require the $10/user/month Pro plan
- - Basic cloud storage is 1 GB; the Pro 'unlimited' storage is bound to a published fair-use policy
- - Studio Mode lacks multi-track editing, picture-in-picture and callout animation
