ChatPDF
Pros
- + Page-level citations on answers — the single feature that makes it more trustworthy than pasting a PDF into a chatbot
- + Free tier usable without an account: two documents and twenty questions per day at time of writing
- + Scope has grown past PDFs: Word, PowerPoint, Markdown, text, YouTube videos and web pages, with multi-file folders
- + Language-agnostic — ask in a different language from the document's and it bridges them
- + Study toolkit around the chat: summaries, flashcards, slides exportable to .pptx, per chatpdf.com
Cons
- - No public pricing page; Plus appeared at $19.99/mo (USD tracker) and €16.99/mo (euro checkout) in the same month, and varied between visits
- - Underlying models are GPT-4o/GPT-4o-mini per the company — behind the frontier on hard multi-document reasoning in late 2026
- - Scanned PDFs and photos are not supported per the mobile app's own listing, contradicting older OCR marketing claims
- - Free tier caps at 20 questions/day and 120-page files; a single serious session exhausts it
- - Plus still caps files at 2,000 pages / 32MB with no overage option, which is tight for heavy contract or literature work
Brainscape AI Flashcards
Pros
- + Confidence-Based Repetition is perceptibly better tuned than binary spaced repetition — in my two-week block, interval behaviour tracked my actual recall
- + AI deck generation turns dense notes into a clean 20-card deck in under a minute in my test; free tier includes hundreds of AI-generated cards
- + Genuinely free self-study: unlimited manual creation and studying of your own cards forever, no ads
- + Certified expert-curated decks are noticeably cleaner and better organised than user decks in my comparison on exam subjects
- + Web Pro at $7.99/month (annual billing) is fair for the depth of engine and library on offer
Cons
- - Text-to-speech, promised for 2025, had still not shipped as of December 2025 App Store reviews — a real gap for language learners
- - iOS in-app Pro costs $19.99/month versus $7.99/month on the web for the same product; subscribing through Apple is a bad deal
- - Studying Certified and other users' public decks is Pro-only, so 'free forever' does not cover the library
- - No PDF/PowerPoint course import and no images or audio on free-tier cards
- - Certified coverage is uneven outside popular subjects; niche topics leave you with variable-quality user decks
