Amazon Q Developer

Pros

  • + Account-aware assistance: bill analysis, resource diagnostics and well-architected guidance inside the AWS Console — nothing generic matched it
  • + Code transformation agents for Java upgrades and .NET porting produced reviewable plans; 1,000 free lines/month for validation
  • + Security scanning (50 scans/month free) flagged hardcoded secrets and vulnerable dependencies in my runs, with reference tracking and public-code suppression
  • + Per-user Pro pricing ($19) with IP indemnity, IAM Identity Center and admin dashboards was straightforward procurement for AWS shops
  • + Existing customers retain IDE plugin access through the transition window with critical bug fixes

Cons

  • - Being sunset: sign-ups blocked since May 15, 2026 and IDE plugins lose support April 30, 2027 — AWS directs new users to Kiro
  • - Free tier's 50 agentic requests per month is shared across chat and coding and drains fast; hard stop at the cap
  • - Pro's request limit (~1,000 user requests/month, FAQ-only) has no overage purchase — a hard ceiling mid-month
  • - Code generation trailed the leading assistants in my comparisons; value was heavily AWS-dependent
  • - Newest models pulled from Q Developer in May 2026, and GitHub/GitLab transformation integrations were deprecated in late 2025/early 2026

GitHub Copilot

Pros

  • + Unmetered code completions and Next Edit Suggestions on every plan — my credit balance never moved during a full day of passively-assisted coding
  • + Widest surface coverage in the category: VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Xcode, github.com, Mobile, Windows Terminal, desktop app and CLI
  • + Coding agent works inside GitHub's review loop — assigned issue in, reviewable pull request out, in my testing
  • + Free tier is genuine: 2,000 completions/month, Copilot CLI, and free Pro for verified students, teachers and popular OSS maintainers
  • + Credits are transparent per model at listed API rates (docs.github.com), with 1,500 total monthly credits on the $10 Pro plan

Cons

  • - Fallback to cheaper models when you run out was removed in the 2026-06-01 usage-based transition — credits run out, work stops or you top up
  • - Annual Pro/Pro+ subscribers stay on old premium-request pricing until expiry, then drop to Copilot Free unless they actively upgrade
  • - In-editor context is narrower than Cursor's repo-indexed agent on large codebases in my experience
  • - Requires a GitHub account throughout; no support for GitHub Enterprise Server
  • - Some premium models (Claude Fable 5/5.1) retain data by default per the docs, with ZDR access for approved enterprises only through end of 2026
